blipp (1630), Newark, New Jersey, USA Jan 17, 2008 Updated: Aug 22, 2008Bottle. Pours dark, murky, muddy brown. Plenty of sediment pours out with the last few drops and some rests atop the lasting beige head, which look slike it’s climbing up the side of my glass. The aroma is quite sweet. In the foreground there arom aplums, raisins, ripe berries, and caramel. Lying a little beneath is chocolate and fresh bread. The first sip prickles the tip of my tongue and rolls smoothly down the back of my throat. The flavor is very subtle and complex, nothing jumps right in your face and demands attention. There is a delicate balance of fruit and chocolate cocoa powder, which combine to make a perfect bittersweet flavor. Yeast and spices are also present, and lead to a refreshing and dry finish, which leaves me craving another sip. hoppopotamus (182), Santa Cruz, California, USA Jan 16, 2008 Dark opaque brown with lots of sediment, off-white medium head that leaves lace. Smells like plum/prune with some alcohol. The taste starts sweet and finishes dry. Alcohol is well-hidden until the very end. mixinnixon2000 (227), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jan 16, 2008 delicius beer. almost as good as the ten. lots of sweetness balanced out with with a nice sweet finish. 17thfloor (1402), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jan 16, 2008 Updated: Mar 15, 2009[Rated 1.16.08] Dark mahagany pour with fine head. Wonderful nutty aroma of cookie dough and a tiny bit of vinegar. I see why some people like this the best of the three. More flavor than the 6 but a little more mellow than the 10. The flavors dont seem to be as deep and complex as the 10 but are still very good. Lots of sweet and dry nuts, spicy malt, and I do taste a little plum in the finish. Extremely airy body, slightly sticky finish. Fine carbonation keeps it light and tingly but not too extreme. Hides the alcohol a lot better than the 10 also. 9.5.9.5.18
[Rerated 3.15.09] So for a mere 1.25 Euro I received a 15cl pour of this at ZBF, who could pass that up? Unfortunately, everyone who tasted it thought it was quite off, a sugary mess, obviously very young, so this begs for a rerate. From bottle, pours a clear glowing reddish brown that is way too dark to see thru with a small thick fizzy dense patchy froth. Fantastic aroma, quite rich and doughy, dark fruits, bitter and yeasty draws parallels to the westy. First taste is very dry with a touch of alcohol, bitter, then sweet and nutty. This is quite fantastic and I’m glad what I tasted at ZBF was not completely representative. Flavor again has similarities to the westy 8. As is warms flavors become nearly burnt toffee, candi sugar, alcohol blends nicely, nutty, doughy, with a bitter dark fruit plum yeasty finish, almost licorice. A tad too much alcohol and flavors maybe too subdued. Full mouthful, medium/full body with sharp abundant medium fluffy carbonation, a bit too airy at first but then it settles down. I’m starting to think that I actually like the 6 the best??? oy (I have a few aging so maybe it’ll make its way back into my top 10 in good time)
9.5.9.4.17 bassbuckeye (81), Ohio, USA Jan 15, 2008 Beautiful carmel head that lingers. Sweet plum with a slight orange spice . I really like this beer I cant wait to try the 10. BlackForestCO (819), Fort Collins, Colorado, USA Jan 13, 2008 Updated: Mar 9, 2009Poured from a bottle. Poured a deep brown color with nice rising bubbles with a thick beige head that left nice lacing. Aroma of spicy yeast, some fruits including plums and some a bit of orange, finishing with a hint of brown sugar. Nice smooth, semi-molasses sweet entry that leads into a yeasty finish with various dark fruits coming out . Nice and smooth. Definitely a nice beer. cyrenaica (435), Milton, Ontario, Canada Jan 12, 2008 330ml bottle
9.2% ABV
The beer was clearly marked 9.2% as opposed to 9.3%. I tried this beer on December 28, 2007 at "Smokeless Joe’s" in Toronto. The beer poured a dark brown with a huge generous brown head that lasted and lasted. The aroma was very yeasty with some dark fruits and spices. The mouthfeel was full bodied with some mild carbonation. The flavour was very malty followed by some yeasty tones. A very good beer, but not as good as the ’10’ zeke626 (301), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Jan 12, 2008 Updated: Feb 12, 2009330 mL bottle. Pours a cloudy brown with large light brown head. Aroma is sweet, malty, with hints of fruit and maybe bubble gum or candy. Flavor is complex, with tastes the same as in the aroma. Mouthfeel is fizzy and smooth. Well-balanced body that finishes remarkably clean and smooth considering the alcohol content.
