Smells very malty, some pepper, kind of like the ocean. Some of the 9.3 is noticable, very nice yeasty flavor with malts that taste like black forest chocolate cake. | 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Nov 18, 2004 I didn’t realize this was so highly rated. I have had the 10 and loved it. Vegatal, hemp aroma; very nice and unique. Brown body. Beautiful lace. Hoppy for a Belgian. Unique, saffron notes, very high in alcohol. jake65 (1725), Williston, North Dakota, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Apr 7, 2007 Bottle: Pours a murky, reddish brown color with a lasting finger of beige head. Lively carbonation, but not that noticable when taking a sip. Nose is a bit fruity, as well as an earthy, breadiness. Kind of muddled. Taste is sweet, fruity, just a bit bready, hint of sherry, and warming. Subtle, yet in depth flavors are not competing with each other. Delicious. Enjoyit (1712), Vadum, Denmark

| 4.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 10/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | May 15, 2004 Updated: Oct 5, 2006my first belgian strong ale. pours dark brown with a huge off white head. smells like plums, alcohol, and malty. taste is sweet with a chocolate like/ plum flavor. this reminds me somewhat of hair of the dog adam in the aspect of the plums.. but it certianly is nothing close. this is a great beer. sampled around 60 degrees. a nice sweet flavor to this as well. i like this beer. perhaps the belgian beer just doesnt do it for me as much as the american super hoppy beers do.
update: having drank this many times since my original rating, i feel that I rated it a bit low the first time around. This stuff is great, probably one of the best belgian strong ales on the planet. Amazing nose and body, great great beer, and a staple at my house for sure. joet (1708), Fulton, California, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Mar 16, 2002 Dark cocoa brown color with huge rocky light tan foam, initial aromas are cocoa, brand new shoes, vinous, figgy and I’m gettin’ figgy widdit. Lightly creamy texture, medium effervescent. This is very very nice though a bit on the crispy side. Some yeast adds a touch of sweetness, salt and cheesyness. Flavorful but medium bodied brew. It’s going way too quickly. Some light mustiness. Lightly tangy finish. Some light hints of phenol. This is a truly outstanding beer. Enjoy with fruit or bitter chocolate. daniele (1703), Italy

| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 18, 2003 Body is dark red and brown. Big head typical of the trappist ales. Aroma of brandy, cherry and other dark fruits. Flavour is quite alcohol dominated but the fruit does a decent job of dealing with this. A lot of malt to this beer as well. Finish is tangy and nice.
