Aroma has lots of dark fruits - raisin, prune and plumb. Also picking up some brown sugar, sweet malts, and floral scents. Flavor is pleasantly sweet with dark fruits, molasses, and yeast. Lots of thick sugary flavors with the taste of sweet, overripe raisins. Smooth and delicious. The 10 is still an overall amazing experience, but I’m quite a big fan of anything Rochefort. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Aug 17, 2006 Like the Doobie Brothers song goes (minus the Jesus reference), "This one is just alright with me". While I didn’t find it mind-blowingly fantastic, it is a nice beer to drink but IMO, there are better Belgian Strong Ales out there. I know that might seem a bit sinful to say, but the cat’s already out of the bag. Aroma was dark fruit but very withdrawn for my liking. It didn’t reach out and grab my nosehairs like I thought it might and twist them into a knot. Instead it sort of wafted about like a stroll thru the park, minding it’s own business. Appearance was a dark read in color, nice head with good lacing. Mouthfeel was a bit carbonated for my liking, full bodied and strong with a nice alcohol bite. Flavors are dark fruits, a bit woody and slightly chocolately but just not enough to make me stand-up and take notice. It’s a good beer, but just not great. MrManning (1655), London, Ontario, Canada

First bottle courtesy of Joey Capps a couple years ago. Original score is 3.8. Sweet minty aroma, with cassis, spices, and lots of floral notes. Dark brown pour, frothy mocha head. Tons of lacing. Sweet yeasty fruity flavours dominate. Plum, cherry, berries, wood. Good great grand. Bitter sweet finish, smooth and creamy, and very enjoyable. Styles (1653), Lincoln Park, Michigan, USA

Big beige head fades a little, but lasts the whole beer. Nice yeasty banana and chocolate aroma. Hints of spice. Initial flavor is chocolate malt. Flavor is everywhere though, bread, yeasty banana, spice, grape or other dark fruit. No sip taste the same. uummmm!! good beer!! Bart (1653), Brussels, Belgium
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jul 30, 2006 Brown coloured with an average off-white head. Rather sweet yeasty alcoholic aroma with some distinctive dark ripe fruity hints and some roasted caramel touches. Full body, creamy. Finish is more bitter, with a slight touch of sweet fruity and alcohol. This is a top beer. Marsiblursi (1652), Göteborg, Sweden

Smells marzipan. Alcohol. Malt. Plums and liquorice. The taste is sweet. Soil and smokey tobaco. Salty. Marzipan. Almonds. Brown sugar and some milk- chocolate. 8/3/6/4/15 Second try: (Bottle, 2 to 3 years old) Pours dark mahogany brown. Creamy, pale nougat coloured head. The aroma holds earthy and fruity tones up front. Mild tones of figs, prunes, ripe dark cherries, green raisins, rum, brown sugar, mild burned cookies, tobacco, chocolate, liquorice and maybe a touch of blackberries and black currant. Bit Belgo-spicy as well. A tiny touch of herbs and citrus acid. The flavour is light to medium sweet, light bitter and tiny acidic with tones of dried/dark fruit, cherries, spices, earth, tobacco, dark sugar, chocolate, cookies and liquorice. The mouthfeel is round and velvety with that typical, playful Rochefort carbonation. Complex but subtle finish. Medium bodied.
