Muddy brown, with a thick firm tan head. Musty old flavor of candied pears, toffee at midpalate, perfect balance. Chestnuts appear when warmer. Nice transitions. Alcohol noticeable, but feels much less than it is. Faint thistle finish playfully comes and goes. Remarkably well conceived and made. It would probably pair well with strong cheeses. Who could not like this one? wingman333 (246), San Antonio, Texas, USA
| 4.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Feb 22, 2009 I had been drinking Lite all day and wanted something good. Found this at Milltown. Poured from bottle into signature bulb-type glass. Deep brown in color with flavors of brown sugar, and maybe fig or prune. Very rich but not overly so. So good, I will have to try the 10 when it’s available. matt7215 (981), Cambridge, Ontario, Canada

Similar to the 10 but better balanced without the prominent hotness of alcohol. Truly divine with an explosion of dark fruits, caramel, chocolate and honey. One of my favorites. leeburg (149), Juneau, Alaska, USA

Sugars, fruits, spices, everything I want in a trappist. Good mouthfeel, good alcohol presence... captivated after the first sip. Codythegreat (146), Carrollton, Georgia, USA
| 4.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | Mar 12, 2008 Pours a very dark brown (murky I guess) with a heavy light tan head. Lot’s of bubbles. I was a little worried at first because I’ve been striking out with every Belgian Strong Ale I’ve had after the Chimay Grand Reserve (which is tied for my favorite) but
this one is really good. I’m glad I bought it. Hop flavor is low. I can’t smell very many hops either. Very well balanced overall. This is better than the $40 bottle of Scaldis Prestige I had. I drank this out of a tumbler. Sassenach (59), USA
