Aroma of spices, sweet malts, biscuit dough, black cherries and prunes. Flavor is very warm and full with cherry and prunish tastes, with a nicely balanced sweet malt flavor and a very prominent alcohol finish. The aftertaste is slightly dry and fruity. Very good beer. thehoff (569), Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA

Alcohol first, dark dried fruits, chocolate, coffee, banana, smells quite dry. Surprisingly subtle flavor at first and then builds. Bites the taste buds in the end. Tastes of fruit peel (mostly apple), slightly floral, has a different tanginess, like no other beer I have had. Smooth beer. Some spices that I cant really place. Excellent beer. I enjoy the fact that it is so subtle. Crockett (904), Steelback County, Ontario, Canada

Pours dark brown almost black, with piles of floaters. Fizzy mouthfeel. Nice alcohol heat. Cookies and bread, piles of malt, chocolate, and ripe fruit. I prefer the 10, but I think it was a little warmer. bitter (1137), Henderson, Nevada, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Apr 13, 2004 bottled: dark brown with some hazy sediment. tan rocky head with sediment here and there. nice nose, spiced apples and sweet malt. on the palate nice and smooth and oily. malty sweet texture with raisin plum goodness. wow, this is nice. cant taste the high alcohol at all. too small of a bottle, not even 12 oz. but damn good and more complex then your old rubix cube. cant wait to try 6, 10, is there a 12? jde123 (715), Washington, Washington DC, USA

Dark brown with a large tan head. Smells perfect, like perfection, and perfect things, and things that are perfect, like my use of adjectives. Flavor is a little smoky, not expected, although rich and full of fruits and caramel, though still light enough to enjoy. This is a great beer. One of my favorites. marcus (1904), Sacramento, California, USA

Consume date is 2013, I have to buy another bottle to to age, it sure will get better. Dense and creamy brown head that to my surprise faded too soon, with a lot of floaties. Hazy brown colour. Aroma: cocoa, figs, raisins, barrel aged wine, plums, vanilla. Mouthfeel is just warmness, like a brandy. Taste:complex, its different with every sip, figs, apricots, cocoa, vanilla. Hard to say everything that goes on in this beer. Just great, probably the best of the Rocheforts. walter (359), Staunton, Virginia, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Nov 13, 2005 Bottle. Deep amber color with slight sediment and a big creamy head that lasts. Nose is very balanced and inviting-- light caramel malt, sweet raisin and tart fruit, and a flowery yeast aroma that is out of this world! Flavor delivers on all of these, with a smooth mouthfeel and completely masked alcohol throughout. I enjoyed this a little more than the 10. I think the lower abv in the 8 really allows the terrific yeast profile to shine through. Good stuff indeed!
