ross (1525), charlotte, North Carolina, USA May 15, 2004 Updated: Oct 5, 2006 my first belgian strong ale. pours dark brown with a huge off white head. smells like plums, alcohol, and malty. taste is sweet with a chocolate like/ plum flavor. this reminds me somewhat of hair of the dog adam in the aspect of the plums.. but it certianly is nothing close. this is a great beer. sampled around 60 degrees. a nice sweet flavor to this as well. i like this beer. perhaps the belgian beer just doesnt do it for me as much as the american super hoppy beers do.
update: having drank this many times since my original rating, i feel that I rated it a bit low the first time around. This stuff is great, probably one of the best belgian strong ales on the planet. Amazing nose and body, great great beer, and a staple at my house for sure.
Borresteijn (509), Amstelveen, Netherlands Aug 28, 2008 Had this beer many times, this stuff just keeps amazing me. Pours very deep dark brown, like dark chocolate, with a creamy beige head. Aroma is imo the only "flaw", it could have been stronger. Subtle aroma of dark fruits, mostly malts and dark chocolate, some alcohol. Flavour is soft, malts, lots of dark chocolate, some dark fruits and a bit of alcohol. The beauty of this beer is that you don’t have to work your way through a load of sugary sweetness like with so many other dark strong ales. Soft and creamy mouthfeel, nice lingering finish, full bodied. CafeeOndineke (15), Aalst, Belgium Aug 25, 2008 bottle 33cl, aroma of figs, fruity, the peel of oranges, look darkbrown, the taste of fondant chocolate, a bit sugary jameswolfe (94), Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA Aug 25, 2008 Well balanced and very complex taste of raisen and caramel. A little too much carbonation for my taste, but that is the style. flatmatt (74), Northville, Michigan, USA Aug 25, 2008 330 mL bottle. Pours red brown with a small white head. Aromas of dark fruits, caramel, hint of alcohol. Flavor is a combination of caramel and dark fruit with touches of black licorice, bread, hops, and apple. Raisin finish. Excellent flavor profile, very enjoyable. A little better than my recollection of Rochefort 10. Dastrn (37), Warsaw, Indiana, USA Aug 24, 2008 Updated: Aug 25, 2008Poured a dark coffee brown with a small tan head. Smelled of brown sugar, rice, and smoke, with a hint of banana. The taste was dominated my burnt chocolate and a bit of malt. The mouthfeel was a little more fizzy than I expected, but it worked.
Overall a decent strong ale, but can’t stand up to #10, or a handful of better strong ales I’ve had recently.
