williamherbert (461), Syracuse, New York, USA Aug 27, 2009 The appearance is dark brown; light brings a reddish tinge, akin to a dark brown ale. Head lasts a few minutes, then becomes a layer of thin film. Specks of lace.
Wonderfully deep roasted, nutty and smoky smell. Bready and dry. Slightly sweet accent of plums, but mostly roasted.
Immediate smoky flavor, similar to mesquite, followed by bittersweet malts. The mesquite become an accent and the roasted malts and sweet stone fruits take over. Really nice. Burnt cookies with warmth.
The feel is dry and ashy; sandpaper. It’s a very nice, dry porter. Smoky and rich. DrDavid (957), Johnson, Vermont, USA Apr 3, 2009 Bottle. Malty roasted aroma. Reddish black body, light beige head. Flavor is definitely smoky, notes of coffee, lots of roasted malt. Finish is lengthy, smoky, very tasty. elihapa (1033), Honolulu, California, USA Mar 10, 2009 Bottle. Pours dark brown with a small head. Aroma is lightly smoky, but primarily malty. Flavor has dark malt, water, and smoke, in that order. There is just an overall thinness to this beer that really drags it down. Cletus (5001), Connecticut, USA Jan 10, 2009 Pours brown with a tan head. Smells ofd roasty malt and smoky. Tastes smoky with some molasses and licorice present. Better than the imperial version for sure. lebshiff21 (85), Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, USA Dec 31, 2008 Pours dark brown with beige head. Smells like coke, some coffee, little smoke. Flavor and palate are nice, still very little smoke. Good porter notes though. Malty, not very sweet, roasty. Pretty decent. 19641948 (492), Greensboro, North Carolina, USA Jun 12, 2008 Pours a deep cola brown with a short-lived beige head. Roasty dark malts and burnt coffee in the aroma. Sadly, no tendrils of smoke to rise to greet your nostrils. Nutty, chocolatey, roasty, but no real smokiness per se in the flavors. Burnt grains and burnt coffee, but no smoldering lingering smoke. Still, once I get past the lack of smokiness that I desire, it’s a pretty tasty porter. Just not smoked. blklab2007 (932), Connecticut, USA Jun 4, 2008 bottle poured into a snifter has a dark red black color and a thin tan head. aroma has lightly smoked sweet malt, cocoa, and cola. mouth feel is fizzy with a thin body. flavor is somewhat sweet, chocolate malt, almost undetectable smoke, drying, and finishes thin with light bitterness. lots of carbonation just does not help the thinness. definitely a gateway beer. dmac (1418), Toms River, New Jersey, USA May 22, 2008 12 oz bottle from a 12 pack sampler. Pours a murky muddy chocolate brown with light brown edges, lots of clinging carbonation and a small off white head. Aroma of chocolate malts, slight must or perhaps that is Rock Arts version of smoke. Thin bodied with lots of bubbly harsh carbonation. Flavor of watered down chocolate syrup, perhaps a touch of wet smoke, slight caramel and some artifiical sweetner finishes this one off. Well this one wasn’t great, not even good, pretty much what I have come to expect from Rock Art.
