MadIndian (987), Levittown, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 12, 2009 Bottled. Dark tan pour nice nose of roast and caramel malts. A nice medium bodied brew with roast and a bitter finish. It was good. Leighton (234), New York, New York, USA Oct 2, 2009 Had a pint on draft at The Red Square in Burlington, VT. I enjoyed this brew a whole bunch and was surprised to see a sub-3 rating. Pours a rich, dark brown with a medium head. Nose is roasted malts and hints of hop. Flavor is complex, not surprisingly, dazzling the palette with the myriad sensations. Notes of caramel, chocolate and coffee. Finish is very smooth. I want to try this beer again. ononews9 (25), Hanover, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 16, 2009 12 oz bottle poured into a pint glass. dark ale that has a taste of a porter. good flavor. strong malt smell and taste. ljay6880 (132), , Pennsylvania, USA Sep 16, 2009 12 oz bottle served in a clear pint glass. Pour was a dark tea color with 2 fingers of slightly off-white head. Nose is malt, chocolate, caramel, and light toffee. Taste is roasted malts, light caramel and chocolate, with a slightly bitter malt that lingers into the finish. This is quite a different spin on a barely wine. It seems more like a cross between a porter and strong ale. williamherbert (420), Syracuse, New York, USA Aug 27, 2009 Deep but clear cherry red. A finger of rose-white head. Depth of a red wine. Slow carbonation.
An initial gritty whiff of scotch ale-like grain. Second whiff of sweet grape and coffee/mocha. A barleywine mixed with a porter. Bitter but not brutal. Smoky.
The taste is burnt porter-like malt bitterness; a secondary hit of dark grape and berry. Thick tobacco leaf. It’s unusually bitter; closer in flavor to a dark porter than a barleywine.
Ashy and smooth both. A bit dry/ashy for style though. A deep, rich, dry and bitter barleywine ale. Coffee + grape + tobacco. Rciesla (3500), Exit 15W, New Jersey, USA Aug 20, 2009 Bottle. Pours an amber body with an off white head. Caramel and toffee with a light sugar note, a bit warm with a nutty bitter dark fruit finish. Decent at best. eaglefan538 (2351), Wilmington, Delaware, USA Jul 15, 2009 Bottle pulled out of the cellar after a year from who knows where… at the NSSMNSLT - a "bonus" lame-o bottle thrown in the mix by me, how generous, choke, choke! Poured a light amber color, well short of copper or anything with depth. The aroma was roasty caramel. The flavor was roasty toasty caramel. Some nuts. No hops. Bitter from the roast? Wet grass also in there. A concotion that didn’t really come together well for me. Mouthfeel was way light for a BW. What can you do? Another tick tick tick. Bleh. Bigsilky (322), Charleston, USA Jul 6, 2009 Deep amber with tinges of distressed leather. Warm toffee, brown sugar, and a touch of bakng spice on the nose. Palate is a bit underwhelming, some coffee in the backgrond with a good dose of carbonation. Great introduction to the style, very reserved. Not sticky and not at all hoppy. There is balance, but no strong element defines the beer. Very large on the number of ingredients, very simple in its execution. Should do nice with a Macanudo. 84
