Alex420 (38), Rome, Italy Nov 9, 2009 65clbott@Strasbourg Mondial de la Biere.
Dark brown in color with a white frothy head. Smoke and smoked ham nose. Spicy, mint and smoke on the nose. Not a lot of hops. Not really extreme as it says on the bottle. Medium bodied.
Yves (989), Beerse, Belgium Nov 7, 2009 Hazy light brown coloured beer with a small off-white head and only few carbonation. Malty roasted aroma. Full palate. Finish is only slightly roasted bitter. Very nicely balanced. hellbilly (1492), scottsdale über alles, Arizona, USA Sep 10, 2009 dark orange-y mahogany brown colored pour topped by 48 bubbles and a sheet of tan foam.
the smell reminds me of buttery yeasty raisin studded brioche. add in some brown sugar, cinnamon, florals and a prickly alcohol note to complete it.
the flavor contains all the aforementioned notes plus a light tartness, cocoa, chocolate, toasted nuts, wood and a touch of roasty bitterness. weird... it’s all over the place.
it is medium bodied but feels much thinner since it pretty much lacks carbonation. it is fairly easy to drink otherwise. 6/3/6/2/13/3.0 williamherbert (461), Syracuse, New York, USA Aug 30, 2009 A deep and rich reddish brown; no head at all. It’s almost purple, incredibly deep and thick. If it had any head whatsoever it would be amazing.
Smells like whiskey, strong and instense: you could light this on fire. As it mellows, taks on the properties of a dark Belgian ale with a brown ale mixed in.
A stinging Belgian funk in the flavor, wild yeasts. Heavy and harsh sweet caramel malts like a Scotch ale. A little sour(like a geuze/lambic), a little bitter (like a burnt scotch), a little funky (like a brett-laden funkhouse ale). They aren’t perfect together; a cola finish.
Thick and ashy feel. Strong; a real choker. It’s an interesting, complex, imperfect beer. Lots of flavors, but they don’t always mesh perfectly. BOLTZ7555 (1053), Phoenix, Arizona, USA Aug 27, 2009 Just not a fan of this...flavor includes brown sugar, raisin, cocoa, and coffee. Roasted malt is all that makes its way to the nose. Mississippi mud in color with a few large bubbles and a razor thin whisp of a head. Not enough carbonation and thin. Won’t buy again. dnstone (135), , New Jersey, USA Jul 14, 2009 Im fairly confident that I got a bad bottle. No head and barley a bubble I’ve had this beer before and I don’t remember the beer being like this. Malty like a brown ale with a belgian touch this beer has potential. rustychiles (997), Mesa, Arizona, USA Jul 7, 2009 Pours a hazy deep brownish red with a small soapy off white head that leaves a bit of sticky lacing. Aroma is a strange combination of rasins, dark chocolate, yeasts, nuts, toffee, roasted coffee beans. Flavor is rasins, burnt coffee, yeasts, wood. Finishes bitter from the chocolate and finishes with an almost powdery mouthfeel. Strange brew, didn’t do it for me but definitely unique. 41cubs (131), , New Jersey, USA Jun 28, 2009 This beer has great potential with its raisin, brown sugar, vanilla extract aroma, but it definitely evokes more of an overall doppelbock feel than a strong belgian due to the complete lack of carbonation. Had two glasses of this and the second one was poured aggresively only to yield a tiny 1/3 inch head. Flavor is light woodiness, a little fig but not much else. I’m very interested at how this could be with a tweak in the yeast levels by the brewery. Thank You Rock Art. 2009 22 oz.
