The aroma is sweet and nutty, while the flavor is sweet nutty combined with hints of oranges, leading to a dry slightly bitter end. An OK flavor for a Brown Ale. argo0 (6974), Washington DC, USA

Light milk chocolate and vanilla in the nose. Well balanced flavor. A touch citric and fairly bitter. Cocoa. Medium-bodied with a scathing mouthfeel and lively carbonation. Coarse, dry finish. ¾ (4999), Colorado, USA
| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Jun 19, 2007 Bethesda. Nose is simply toasted bread and caramel malts. About how you would expect an American brown ale to smell. Color is dark muddy brown. Flavor is very weak, only a hint of toated barley and maybe a touch of some cinnamon toast, before being overpowered by the sickly sweet taste of basic malt syrup. Sweet overall, no glaring brewing defects present other than an unimaginative recipe. JPDIPSO (4928), Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, USA

Brownish color, light head and lacing. Nose of light tinny toffee and caramel. The flavor is a bit lotiony, some sweet malt. Eh, boring. Thin body. chriso (4851), London, Greater London, England
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jul 16, 2007 On tap (sampler) at the Bethesda location, July 2006. Reddish copper colour - quite pale for a Brown ale. It was also distinctly hoppy for the style, with distinct citrus notes and a quite dry mouthfeel which, combined with the expected nutty malt, produced a nicely balanced brew. I am not usually a fan of American brown ales but I liked this one. Probably because it wasn’t very typical of the style. It certainly didn’t have the residual sweetness that puts me off many of them. Perhaps the brewer at Bethesda has managed to depart from the corporate recipe - who knows with Rock Bottom.
