My impression of this beer was probably a bit tainted because I had it immediately after RB’s excellent Bourbon Barrel Stout (which I enjoyed tremendously). If I could do it over I would probably have had this one first. It was very smokey in there so I didn’t get much nose from the beer. It was a very deep brown/black in color. A nice clean taste for a beer that dark and a smooth finish. For the $7 though I would go with the stout. Ughsmash (4079), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA

Poured a very deep brown with a short-lived beige head... intricate lacing followed it down. Nose started off with sweet bourbon over rich, dark fruit sugars... molasses and caramel were not far behind. Bourbon was better-integrated in the flavor... raisins, plums, molasses, sweet chocolate, vanilla, and oak provided some significant sweetness along with the bourbon, but somehow kept from being cloying. Medium-bodied with a smooth middle and nice bourbon highlights. Left stickiness all around the mouth and was warming going down. Very good brew! beervana (781), Libertyville, Illinois, USA

No discernable carbonation. Slight sweet malt aroma. Full bodied beer with light malt sweetness and pronounced bourbon flavor. Finishes with rich bourbon aftertaste and light hop bitterness. Smooth , rich and creamy. An astounding offering from Rock Bottom Chicago. Thanks to brewmaster Pete and homebrewmaster Scott L for tipping me off! Jokes (1453), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Jan 26, 2006 Dark brown with a thick, dense head. Interesting aroma of chocolate, vanilla, whole grains, coconut, maple syrup and some light oak. It seems that it hasn’t been bludgeoned by spending six months in barrels, but only a little time to lend a mild bourbon component. The body is full and smooth and doesn’t lack in carbonation. The flavor is good, a bit drier and more subtle, the beer over. The aging seems to take away from the natural beer here, leaving a more boring example. I’m not too familiar with many bourbon-barrel aged doppelbocks, so it was cool to try one, but I don’t look forward to future examples. Thanks, Pete; better luck next time.
