Dark brown with a frothy tan head. Strong coffee/mocha aroma with roasted malts. Medium body with a dry chalky mouthfeel. Big coffee and blackened malt taste at first is mildly sweet, with a dry, dark roasted coffee bitterness to finish. A good dessert beer here. Draft 7/07/2005.

This good looking, dark brown brew falls somewhat short on its promises. After the initial pour, it’s got a creamy brown head and a rich roasted malt, coffee, and cocoa aroma. But the head goes away and the body, although creamy, strikes me as being as being a little thin for the style. The flavors reflected in the aroma are combined with a little smokiness and some hop bitterness and goes out with a brief dry finish.

I started with this one, but should have went a little lighter on a 90-degree, humid afternoon. Oh well. Brown/black bodied with a creamy, light-brown, fading head. Brewed with coffee in the mash, it came across strong and well-roasted in aroma and taste. Additional smoky aromas and thoroughly bitter flavor. Slick an heavy mouthfeel. Ouch... good. Will try again when it’s cooler out. In Chicago, that could mean tomorrow.

Dark brown body with a moderately thick, mocha colored head. Roasted coffee, cardboard, burnt malt, light caramel and a touch of sweet cocoa. Smooth, succulent body with little carbonation to distract the tongue. Strong bitterness is the key element in this palate of flavor. Varying bitterness from the coffee, burnt malts and lightly piney hops paint the majority of the picture. A bit of malty sweetness come out from time to time. The finish is a bit disappointing, as the flavors fade away, like invisible ink. Not a terrible beer, but lacking some of the depth necessary to be great. Just an average beer, in my opinion.
