TAR (1995), Boulder Co., Colorado, USA May 12, 2008 Draft @ brewery: Black with a mahogany sheen. Dense, custardlike head. Coffee, sugared plums, roasted malt, chocolate taffy and a smidge of caramel comprise the nose. Very soft carbonation. Watery body. Roasted malt hulls pave the way as a suggestion of silky chocolate follows through. Vibrantly java-laden and a deep nutty-malt accompaniment. Though the lighter malts provide bready structure and depth, the body remains thin, largely due to the overemphasis on the roasted malt hulls. Touch of charcoal and a faint metallic twang lightens the malt girth as it unites with the succulent raisiny core. Finishes cleanly and bittersweet with dark chocolate and creamed coffee trailed by a lingering nuttiness. Respectable.
