Clearly I’ve failed, but I hope my incoherent and cryptic critiques can help at least a few folks who wander in and want to know what to order.
It takes a very loving and, to a degree, forgiving person to love a canine creature of such hideousness as adorns (blemishes?) the label of Rock Bottom’s Lumpy Dog. It takes a similar character to love the beer after which it’s named. The sickly, urine yellow color is off putting enough to worry even a hardened beer veteran, and the cookie cutter American lager odor reeks of prosaic commonality. The taste is on par with any pale lager, which collectively deserve to take a one way tour of our cities’ fine plumbing systems. There is an appealing but low key sea salt taste, but that’s no substitute for good flavor. This should technically be the first sample you have, it being the lightest of Rock Bottom’s fare, but you may want to skip it altogether and leave it for the beer nebbishes at the table.

| 2.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 3/10 | 2/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 11/20 | Dec 26, 2005 This draft brew from the brewery in Cinci poured a small sized head of fine to medium sized mostly diminishing white colored bubbles that left behind a good lacing. The body contained soft carbonation, was transparent and weak straw yellow in color. Its aroma was non-existent. Its mouth feel is initially tingly and crisp with a lingering tingly crisp palate. Its flavor contained crisp mild malt hop notes. Dickinsonbeer (3494), Hoboken, New Jersey, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Dec 16, 2005 Samples at the Denver Location. Very light color with a thin lace and thin head. Aroma is of grassy hops, light pils malt and some wheat. Smooth flavor with a bit of hops and even some dms/cornlike flavors. Very easy drinking. tiggmtl (4311), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
| 2.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 4/5 | 4/10 | 4/5 | 8/20 | Dec 7, 2005 Very mild, grainy malt aroma is vaguely sweet. Brilliantly clear gloden body with decent, fine bubbled head that recedes to ring with nice lacing. Mild grainy sweet flavour with a slight lemon-citrus herbal note and a whisper of hop bitterness. Light body with strong carbonation. Sampled on tap at Rock Bottom Denver with Olivier_MTL and Rastacouere. pivo (2535), Germany
| 2.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 9/20 | Nov 16, 2005 Light grainy nose, yellow color, lathery head. Full sweet barley taste for a light beer, surprisingly so. Odd balance. Low bitter. Watery and thin. A crowd-pleaser for sure.
| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 3/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Oct 8, 2005 Updated: Nov 20, 2005Tap in Denver. Pours a translucent gold. Aroma is faint hops and sour water. Flavor is tangy sour; it’s like a macro with balls. Palate is decent. Not bad, but not fantastic.
Bottle. Not much different than tap as far as taste, but the lack of carbonation makes it weaker and duller. Mangino (1027), Mississippi, USA
