detroiter (957), Euphoria, Minnesota, USA Feb 11, 2007 Pours a very dark brown - nearly black. A good 2" of deep brown foam on top. Leaves beautiful foam lace behind. Just a bit of kahlua in the aroma.
Exceptionally smooth and mellow, very pronounced chocolate maltiness. Finishes on the sweet side, still lots of chocolate. Very full mouthfeel. Sweet yet balanced.
Excellent dessert beer - but save room for two badgerben (3069), Blaine, Minnesota, USA Dec 4, 2004 Black color with a tall head. Very lovely coffee aroma, but not bitter. The taste is interesting: slightly bitter chocolate and coffee, but morphing into a solid sweetness. There was a distinct fruitiness as well... like a cherry truffle. Tasty fine! robertsreality (2462), Minnesota, USA Dec 3, 2004 Black Coloring With Big Baked Chocolate Head. Aroma of Sweet Malt and Chocolate. First Taste Was ’Foamy’ As the Head Had Not Resided Yet, But Once I Got To The Actual Brew, It Was Very Enjoyable. Wonderful Sweet Malts, and a Flavor Agreeable Distinguished as Chocolate Covered Cherries....and Actually Ended a Bit Bitter and Just a Sliver of Dryness. Definitly Had Some Character to It and Would Definitly go Back for This Brew! piscator34 (905), Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada Nov 24, 2004 Very black in colour. Medium aromas of chocolate and a bit of coffee. Sweet malty chocolate flavor, along wth some vanilla. A bit on the watery side. My favorite of all of the Rock Bottom beers that I tried. I’d had a pint at the pub previously, but consider this now from a growler filled earlier this afternoon.
Appearance: deep, dark, thorugh blackness, sludgy even, not a glint of lint gets through, but, alas, little carbonation arises...
Aroma, ah! Sweetness, depth, and rich character, all unfold in one sniff, more than I’d expect from a sweet stout (and more than I remember from my pint at the pub a few weeks ago), seriously studded with earthy delights, molasses, dark rum, anise and treacle, like a wicked liquid licorice whip, but none too stunning in the strength.
Taste: very mild, sweet, mellow, pleasant, that rich flavor returns, but without an overbearing body, nor too much to bedevil the tongue, just smooth riding all the way down, the way a sweet stout ought to be. Funny, that’s not usual a style that I favor, going more for Oatmeals, or in some moods, Imperials. This is ideal for non-confrontational drinkin’, though. You know, the type most folks turn to light lagers, amber ales, or ESBs for, and it’s great to find that in a stout as well.
I would turn to this often at the pub, personally, unless something more tempting were around.
