detroiter (957), Euphoria, Minnesota, USA Feb 11, 2007 Pours a clear yellow gold, fairly sparkly, with about a quarter inch of acid white head. The head dies back in short order, but it still leaves a respectable lacing. Sweet malt and Karo syrup in the aroma. Not necessarily my cup o’ tea, but great for the style.
Sweet, malty, and um... corny? It has that certain ’malt liquor’ flavor to it, but its not sicky sweet or artificial or grapey or thick & cloying or anything like that. How do I put this? It tastes like a malt liquor would if a malt liquor wasn’t the dregs of beerdom. Or something like that. I get a slight tang of hop bitterness in the finish.
Very smooth, fuller body than expected, and nice fizzy carbonation. Deceptively potent, and even tasty if you are open minded about the style. I’m not sure that I’m open minded about the style.
Pigfoot (2225), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Mar 3, 2005 from a growler, poured into a Belgian-styled snifter goblet.
Clear, pale golden colr, noce, sturdy, snow white head.
Aroma: typical lager nose, nothing but, nothing more, nothing less, sweet, yeah, almost corn-y, but not so bad...I almost like it. bright and vegetal, but not horrid, as I’d expected...aniticipated?
Taste: bare, transparent, and as hollow as the typical lager gets, a great field of nada, but in this case, buttressed by a handy helping of booze. Big vegetal feel, but nothing awful, nothing coarse, nothing palate-searing...this is surprisingly easy to drink!
The booze pipes in rather easily, though, in the middle of my glass...oh, yeah, they got this pegged! Why not serve in a brown paper bag, just go all the way, eh?
Will I go berserk with this "malt likka" in me? Eh...probably not, not my style...but if I did a ton in one sitting, who know what havoc I’d let loose. This certainly does recreate the basic aspects of the style, as it is, but is still somehow drinkable and likable.
Must stand in as the second craft brew malt liquor I’ve yet to sample, and must be the better of the two ( I think).
PS...really gave me the hiccups! Axle3380 (95), montvale, New Jersey, USA Apr 3, 2002 now i know why the brewery is called the rock bottom brewey..this shit i could compare to an old english 40oz. when you open it and dont finish it and start putting your cigarettes out in it..thats just about what it tasted like aceofhearts (1373), San Francisco, California, USA Feb 15, 2002 Sharp smell, strong taste. Somewhat complex, I picked up the flavors it mentions, but it’s not a great beer.
