...taste! Wow, a whole lotta bourbon.
Now I will stop right here and admit that I am not a bourbon drinker, nor am I necessarily a bourbon beer fan. I can appreciate them for what they are, but like I say, not being a bourbon guy - their taste is usually lost on me. Really, I’ve only ever had one (Kuhnhenn Bourbon Barrel Barley Wine) where I thought of the bourbon as an integral part of the beer. Generally I just think of it as an added extra taste.
So caveat emptor...
OK, back to the review. The taste was very full of bourbon. In the first couple sips, that’s all I tasted. The third and subsequent sips gave me a noticeable caramel malt in the finish, kinda smoky or burnt, that was both interesting and tasty. Medium bodiied, and perfectly carbonated from the cask pull. Can you guess what the aftertaste is? Its bourbon.
So really, the beer is all about the bourbon character. If that’s your thing, you will love this beer. For me, the bourbon was too rich - one tasty pint was enough for one sitting. I would gladly drink another next time I visit RB, however. If bourbon’s your thing, then your scores may be higher.
