badgerben (3234), Blaine, Minnesota, USA Sep 30, 2008 Autumn Brew Review 2008. Black color with a large head. Light aroma of smoke. The smoked taste definitely stands out, and it’s a Rauchbier smoke, not a peat smoke. Decent malt base with some roastiness.
JK (2509), uptown, Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Oct 12, 2008 ABR 2008. Pulled from a cask. Very smooth palate. There is some smoke but it is far lighter than I hoped for. It does need more smoke flavor. Good otherwise. Thick on the palate, and lightly roasted malt. piscator34 (966), Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada Oct 5, 2008 On draft @ the brewpub (just tapped). Black in colour with medium carbonation. Aromas of chocolate malts, some dark berry fruit, and mild smoke. Flavors are of dark chocolate, a bit of roasted malt, caramel, vanilla, and a hint of cherry pits. Heavy bodied. The roasted+chocolate malts seem a little blunted to me.. a bit mroe astringency could have provied a bit more balance. Fairly good overall. GeneralGao (2628), Iowa City, Iowa, USA Mar 17, 2008 Draft at the brewpub. Opaque black color with a thin tan head that left a bit of lace behind. The aroma was of chocolate with a hint of alcohol. Dry on the tongue with a light splash of alcohol. Tasted of smoke-laced chocolate with hints of molasses and roasty malt. Well done. islay (409), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Mar 13, 2008 16 oz. pour, on tap at the brewpub. Sweet, roasted malt aroma of chocolate and cream. There’s just a hint of sweet tobacco smoke in the smell. Pours dark brown with a small amount of long-lasting, creamy, beige head. Produces nice, long, extensive lacing. Roasted malt flavor surprisingly heavily features citrus tastes. Sharp, tart finish. Interesting. Remarkably light body. Frothy, fluffy, and smooth in the palate. Easy to drink. This is a nice little beer, but it lacks gravitas. It is not very smoky at all, so it probably should be classified as a porter rather than a smoked beer.
