(Nitro Draft: Rock Bottom in La Jolla, CA) Sweet and lightly malty, but kind of lagerish, tasting too much like a cheap beer. The nose is roasty, but not entirely pleasant. Dark ruddy brown in color. Large off-white head keeps on keepin’ on, maintaining a thick layer, which is about the only positive thing I can say about this beer. Otherwise, it’s just so-so.

Pours turbid amber/brown with frothy head. Aroma of malt, fruit, caramel, toffee, oak, and bourbon. Tastes malty, with big bourbon, vanilla, oak, and fruit hints. This one is very tart, almost too tart for me, with a rauchy finish. Complex and pretty solid.

Poured a dark amber color with a very thin, off white head that left very little lacing on the glass as well. Very sweet aroma of caramel, toffee, and butterscotch, with some nuts as well. Taste of roasted malt, more caramel, some peat, and light alcohol. A little too over carbonated.

On tap at the Rock Bottom in KoP. Poured a dark reddish brown color with a smaller off white head. Aromas and tastes of malts and fruits. Caramel and toffee. Between this and the Oatmeal stout I had there today, I may have to revist my thinking behind Rock Bottom’s beers.

On tap in Chicago: Brick Red/Brown with great big fluffy tan head. Sweet malty nose with hints of pine and oak. Nice body shows off a lot of malty flavors, including sweet dark fruits and caramel, peatiness and smokiness is excellent. Finishes clean and slightl;y dry and bitter.

Not all that impressive of a scotch ale, deep brown color with almost a purple-ish hue, decent off-white head with good lacing, but the body & flavors were very thin & bland, only a slight malt profile, wasn’t as strong as a lot of other beers in this syle, a bit too hoppy as well, not all that well-balanced

A bit watery scotch ale. Still better than your average beer, but not so good that I would make a special trip to have it.

Dark chestnut with a thick, dense tan head. The aroma is sweet and malty with brown sugar, toffee, chocolate, toasted grains, raisins and a bit of alcohol. The body is moderately hefty with a softness that caresses the tongue. The flavor is pretty nice and starts sweet, allowing the varied layers of malt to interact before the introduction of the hops at the end which provide a balancing bitterness. The finish is long and warming. Quite enjoyable and a satisfying beer for the first freeze of the season.
