On tap at the brewpub: On tap at the brewpub: This pours a dark opaque brown body with a modest off-white head. The aroma and flavor have roasted malts and barley, a rooty richness, and hints of coffee and milk chocolate. The finish is surprizingly dry. Quite nice.

Guest tap at RB Yorktown. Just right in the Mug Club mug. Dark brown color under a thin tan head. Smell of sweet malt carries over from 2 feet away. Closer, I pick up notes of chocolate and a slight graininess. Taste is malty sweet up front. A bit of stoutish bitterness. Some autolyzed yeast from the keg, which would be off for any lager style. Still, there’s plenty of dark malt flavor to make up for it. Not as much chocolate in the taste, just some hearty dark maltiness and a full mouthfeel all the way down the glass.

Mug club draft on tap at the brewpub (Orland Park, IL). Pours a near pitchblack pour, brownish around the edges which let’s some light through, a big tannish dull head that laces well, dies to a small suitable head. Aromas are a good roasty malt, a touch of ash, sweet chocolate and cream come into play lightly, but the roasted malts seem dominant, with a touch of more bitter coffee taking it’s place. Initial is thicker and fuller, roasted malts and coffee, but smoothed out a bit well. I imagine this would be a bit more flavorful warmer. Still, roasted malts and coffee, dry and a bit ashy, with smoothed out caramel and a touch of bitter chocolate. Roast and bitterness stick to the palate, dry and coffee without being to overbearing. Good flavor to ABV ratio, good body. This beer is pretty good, and would be great as the months get colder.

Served in Mug Club glass at brewpub in Orland Park. Pours dark brown with small tan head. Aroma is roasted malts and some coffee. Flavor is again mostly roasted malts, some coffee and chocolate mixed in. Mouthfeel is a little thin. Decent.
