Cornfield (4412), Oak Forest, Illinois, USA Oct 10, 2008 Definitely not your parents’ Argus. Hop-headed brewmaster Tim Marshall kicked up the hop bill just a FEW notches and built up the grain bill to hold it all together. It poured dark brown body with a bubbly ecru head. The hops leap up your nostrils - pine resin, citrus zest, rude earth - pursued by chocolate, roasted malt, nuts, caramel, vanilla, and a whoof (not "whiff") of alcohol. The flavor surprizingly maintained some semblence of balance, the hoppy bitterness not resuming its control until the finish. Very nice.

Rock Bottom Yorktown, Lombard, IL
DrnkMcDermott (1597), Downers Grove, Illinois, USA Oct 15, 2008 Draft goblet. Dark brown, almost black body, with a quarter-inch cappuccino foam head. First sniff sends a shot of piney hops across the bow, with a volley of grapefruit to follow. Taste is about the same, in fact, I think I swallowed a piece of hop leaf. No "coffee" or "chocolate" malts as the menu card claimed, just a pile of nutty brown malts. It can’t compete with this hop-head’s wet dream, so it stays somehow separate. Stickiness on the lips, some alcohol, but not too warming. It’s like drinking three beers in one—a brown ale, a hoppy IPA and a strong ale! drewbeerme (1895), Chicago, Illinois, USA Oct 10, 2008 Updated: Oct 20, 200810/3/08, 8.5%abv version - chalk board read "Argus India Brown Ale, an Imperial India Brown Ale". I guess this was an experiental imperialized version of Argus, with more hops and mal. growler filled today at the brewpub. pours very dark brown with some parts tan and some parts off white head. nose of tree sap, vanilla, roast, and piney hops. flavor is lots of piney hop bitterness with roasted nuts, vanilla, caramel, and some chocolate, some alcohol finishes it off. body is thin to medium with soft carbonation. perhaps a bit too over attenuated, boardering on not sessionable but heck i still had most of this growler so...a really tasty and very hopped up dark beer. 7/5/8/4/16=4.0

growler, this my second growler of this and wow this beer is so well made, extremely balanced with a wonderful hop presence, and there’s a delightful roast and subtle charred character. extremely drinkable, no booze, oh oh so yummy. 4.0.
