DrnkMcDermott (1597), Downers Grove, Illinois, USA Aug 20, 2008 Updated: Sep 5, 2008 Mug Club draft. Solid, cloudy reddish brown, with a half-inch foam crown. Malty smell actually brings some rye to the nose, along with PNW hop resins. Taste is big on pine and grapefruit, but not a hop bomb. Instead, it lets more of the rich malt in. More peppery spice comes in at the end. Another biggie, and there’s probably some in a barrel waiting for the next few months. Hop load leaves a kind of peppermint aftertaste.
Cornfield (4412), Oak Forest, Illinois, USA Sep 14, 2008 Once more braumeister Tim attacks my weak spot... my love of hops. From the tap this ale poured a slightly hazed dark reddish brown. The head was thick and spongey, an off yellowish tan color, and left crusty chunks of lace on the glass. The nose was unrepentantly hoppy with scents of pine, grapefruit zest, and white pepper. Oh - traces of a caramely malt sweetness were available to smell from time to time. The flavor is surprizingly more balanced, the malt providing more of a backbone than the aroma indicated. But the hops do win out, leaving you with a dry, prolonged bitter finish. Nice job, Mr. Marshall.

Rock Bottom Yorktown, Lombard, IL
pantanap (849), Chicago, Illinois, USA Sep 13, 2008 growler thanks to andrew....pours a deep red caramel brown with a thinnish circular thin film of off-white head.... sharp citrus hops with some underlying caramel malt.... flavors are quite hop-forward at first but mellows out after a bit. can’t say that i get too much malt coming through. some peppery bitterness in the finish to boot. soft carbonation from being in the growler for a bit but still pretty good. kseecs16 (601), Westmont, Illinois, USA Aug 31, 2008 Growler from the pub. Pours an opaque purple hued brown that lights to red at the edges of the glass. Thin of-white head. Sweet hoppy and caramel flavors up front with some spicy notes and strong bitter finish. Full and viscuous in the mouth. Pretty good, this brew left a huge amount of sediment in the bottom of my growler! drewbeerme (1895), Chicago, Illinois, USA Aug 16, 2008 Updated: Aug 17, 2008on tap and later from a growler from the brewpub. pours murky light brown with creamy tan head. beautiful head but not such a looker in the color dept. aroma is loaded with hops - citrus, piney, and earthy notes. a big malt backbone is not without notice underneath that as well. this beer is loaded with hoppy goodness which basically makes this a red IPA, piney, citrus, and grapefruit notes, lightly earthy, caramel and rye malt goodness. it just borders on being too brash but never pushes you over due to its reasonably lower alcohol than most "imperialized" beers and the hops and malt profile work really well together. i wasn’t that impressed at first but i couldnt finish the growler fast enough. way better than Pizza Port Shark Attack IMO. looks like i’ve got an empty growler...
