muzzlehatch (4425), Burlington, Vermont, USA Mar 14, 2002 Updated: Apr 4, 2004 8/14/01 orig rating 3/14/02 rerating -- bottled 2000? Lots of floating matter in this one; very thick and still-looking, with wonderful orange opaque hue. Head diminishes fast. Aroma strong on the cherries, malt, grapes and yeast with perhaps a touch of bitter herbs. Flavor kicks ass! Very potent sour-cherry taste with strong spiciness--pepper and perhaps vanilla? Finish almost too strong for me; stays on the tongue a long time. Better than the 'classic' and such a shame its gone now (I got the last 4 (now 3) bottles in Burlington).
Flemish Sour Tasting with MartinT & Rastacouere Part 1 #4. So this bottle (3rd to my last, sniff!) is now approximately 4 years old, but little the worse for wear. My review stays basically the same, with one point off the flavor line, in part just because it doesn't quite compete with some of the other masterpieces that followed...
Skyview (2851), Papoose Jct., Minnesota, USA Aug 30, 2008 A very pleasant surprise from BDR for sharing this rarity. From 250 ml bottle pours a hazy burnt copper amber brew with a fast dissolving off-white head that leaves behind a swirly film. Aroma of cherries, dark pitted fruits, figs, brown sugar, and a touch of vanilla. Taste is smooth, medium bodied, very little carbonation with flavors of light caramel malt, semi-sweet cherries, brown sugar and a touch of banana liqueur. Finish is a little more towards the sweet side from the extra bottle conditioning and aging which makes this sour remarkable. Thanks for the share! badgerben (3074), Blaine, Minnesota, USA Aug 29, 2008 Sweet merciful crap, thank you BDR! Dark, murky copper color with no head. Light aroma of cherries, lots of raisin and brown sugar. Thick and chewy molasses. A little bit of sour cherry. Finishes a bit leafy, like the leaves were left on the cherries. Only a very little bit of oak is there. Slick malt and mouthfeel. tertons (100), East Providence, Rhode Island, USA Aug 25, 2008 A sweet, almost artifical-like, Flemish Red. Cherry skin filled with a subtle sour twist. A little too sweet and reminds me more of a fruit beer. Ageing, my guess, has done this well with the oak and further bottle settling. At the same time many of the cellar elements are starting to appear on this. imadeadguy (151), Westampton, New Jersey, USA Aug 23, 2008 25cl bottle. Pour is deep ruby with no head at all. Aromas of cherries, sugars, and some sour. The flavor was very different than anything i’ve ever had. The beer was very smooth and was almost like a juice. Very mellowed out and just outstanding. jarspag (503), San Diego, California, USA Aug 7, 2008 Bottle shared with J on the 7/18 tasting in OC. This stuff was just flat out good. Aroma was a sensual oak covered sour cherry...wrapping into a pefect mix of sour/sweet, cherries/berries. learning on the sweet side than what I was expecting. The smoothest, mellowest, softest palate I may have ever encountered in a brew. Just divine all around. The oakiness is shown in all flavor transitions...I absolutely loved it. A nice change of pace from all the big beers.
