Not an attractive beer: it’s cloudy, even muddy amber with a cream head. Malty aroma, quite sweet, uncannily reminiscent of the bottled malt they used to give kids in the 1950’s. Sweet, sticky piney taste with some orange and a lurking bitterness at the back of the throat. Oddly restrained for an American beer, and none the worse for that.

Bottle. Pours a cloudy amber with a large, foamy, beige head. Has a nice hop and pine taste. Is rather sweet. Some malt and caramel is also present. Aroma is much the same, but is a little lighter. The body is a little thin and has a decent bitterness to it. Easy to drink. A good experience, but I would rather choose something else.

On tap at MacGloughlins in Kyoto. Slightly fruity aroma, with decent malt and a bit of earth. Light hops. Relatively light amber malt flavor, with good hopping. Crisp and clean, relatively light palate. Nice earthy, hoppy, dry finish. A very nice session beer.
