Commercial Description:
JLS Release #23: Black Brutal 2007 John Maier has brewed a dark verison of Brutal Bitter for a second time, with some degree of variation from the first Black Brutal recipe (aka, SkullSplitter). Black Brutal 2007 is mahogany in color with a smooth roasted malt flavor and agressive bitterness. Unfiltered ~ Unfined ~ Uncompromised... Prost! Black Brutal '07 is brewed with Great Western 2-row and Munich; Weyermann Carafoam Special, Carawheat, and Melanoidin malts, along with Summit, Simcoe and Amarillo hops in the boil, and more Amarillo in the hopback; plus free range coastal waters, and top fermenting Pacman yeast. Black Brutal '07 measures in at 15.1 Plato OG, 4.2 Plato FG, and approx 60 IBUs.

On dreaft at Monk’s in Phily. Called Rogue Anniversary Black Brutal "Bitter". Reddish brown w/very think foamy head; aroma is hoppy w/ hint of sweetness; hops dominate the flavor but there are some roasty and sweet notes; the palate is think and creamy; finish is dry/hoppy.

on tap @ papago... very dark brown near black pour with a soft toasted marshmallow colored head. it leaves behind frothy stained glass-like lacing. the smell of coffee hits before the beer ever reaches my nose... rich dark chocolate, dark roasty grain, toasted nuts, pine, grass and grapefruit skin. the palate is quite unexpected... really dry! the flavors are strange... very ipa-like up front and on the finish but very porter-like in between.... coffee, bitter chocolate, toasted nuts, cooked cream along with some generic hoppiness, pine and grapefruit pith. bitter, grassy and pine on the finish. full bodied creaminess like a porter. ipa bitterness/parching keeps it from being too rich and undrinkable. soft creamy carbonation. pairs really well with chipotle ranch dressing.

this certainly isn’t a schwarzbier by definition. but it is really effen good...

Rated 7/27/07. Draft at Freakin Frog in Las Vegas, NV. Served in a snifter. Murky dark mahogany to black in color. Small tan head stuck around for the duration and left excellent, thick rings of foamy lacing all the way down the glass. Strong, bitter hoppy nose. I picked up piney, floral, and herbal hops, with a roasted malt and chocolate background. The flavor is wonderfully bitter, with the ample hops melding perfectly with a roastey, choclatey, coffee malt baseline. Medium body that went down like silk. Fantastic brew! Bottom line: This beer is grossly underrated....period.

Draught: Floral, hoppy aroma. Poured dark brown with a hint of ruby and a medium to large-sized rocky, beige head that lasted throughout. Excellent lacing. Opaque. Medium to heavily bitter. Tastes of floral hops with a little bit of chocolate and roasted malt. Medium body. Thin, lightly sticky texture. Average carbonation. Bitter hop finish. Overall, nice and bitter, but lacking a bit in body.
