Commercial Description:
Please note: Black Brutal is not the same beer as Black Brutal Bitter, which is an alias for Skullsplitter.

JLS Release #23: Black Brutal 2007 John Maier has brewed a dark verison of Brutal Bitter for a second time, with some degree of variation from the first Black Brutal recipe (aka, SkullSplitter). Black Brutal 2007 is mahogany in color with a smooth roasted malt flavor and agressive bitterness. Unfiltered ~ Unfined ~ Uncompromised... Prost! Black Brutal ’07 is brewed with Great Western 2-row and Munich; Weyermann Carafoam Special, Carawheat, and Melanoidin malts, along with Summit, Simcoe and Amarillo hops in the boil, and more Amarillo in the hopback; plus free range coastal waters, and top fermenting Pacman yeast. Black Brutal ’07 measures in at 15.1 Plato OG, 4.2 Plato FG, and approx 60 IBUs.

On tap at Capones. Pours a deep brown with chestnut highlights and a medium bubbly/ creamy off white head. Aroma of caramel, toffee, nuts, a touch of chocolate, vanilla and some floral notes. Flavor of toffee, nuts, chocolate, caramel, grapefruit, some pine and a good bit of hop bitterness.

Poured amber with a white head. Aroma of hops. Not much to smell. Damn did this thing finish bitter. Some hops, citrus, and fruit. Rather sweet, but finished bitter.

Poured a dark mahogany color with a medium sized, tan head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of floral hops, pine, roast, and light cocoa. Taste of caramel, nuts, citrus, roast, light chocolate, and a bit of smoke... some light pine in the finish as well.

This was called Rogue Black IPA at Brouwers. Pours black with a tan head. Aroma is that of dark roasted malt, sweet licorice, and earthy hops. Flavor is roasted malt, chocolate, a little licorice and some dry citrus and piney hops. Lingering roasted note. Good stuff.

On dreaft at Monk’s in Phily. Called Rogue Anniversary Black Brutal "Bitter". Reddish brown w/very think foamy head; aroma is hoppy w/ hint of sweetness; hops dominate the flavor but there are some roasty and sweet notes; the palate is think and creamy; finish is dry/hoppy.

Draught: Floral, hoppy aroma. Poured dark brown with a hint of ruby and a medium to large-sized rocky, beige head that lasted throughout. Excellent lacing. Opaque. Medium to heavily bitter. Tastes of floral hops with a little bit of chocolate and roasted malt. Medium body. Thin, lightly sticky texture. Average carbonation. Bitter hop finish. Overall, nice and bitter, but lacking a bit in body.

This release wasn’t a whole lot different then the previous in my opion. A bit less sharp bitterness and less excess alcohol in the finish, but that could just be due to having it a few months after the initial release. Pours brown with a soft beige head. Roasty malts with a bitter citrus/pine finish.

Draught > Flying Saucer. Ehh, not bad. This is pretty hoppy but not IPA hoppy. Reminds me of a ESB more than a schwarzbier. I wonder if the description above is correct?
