Commercial Description:
Brutal combines Oregon hops with English Malts. The Oregon grown Crystal hop is a triploid variety developed from the German Hallertau aroma hop variety with contributions from Cascade, Brewers Gold, and Early Green. Crystal is the only hop used in brewing Brutal and it provides a massive amount of aroma without dry-hopping. The English malts used are floor malted Pipkin (a mellow cross of Maris Otter and Warboys, from an English company called Beeston), Cara Vienna and Cara Wheat.

Pour is copper in color and leaves no head, but just little white bubbles. Aroma is balanced between grainy malts and floral hops. Very nice. The beer is hoppy and malty all at once, with a slight edge to the caramelly malts. Hops are floral and work very well here. Very balanced. This is a great beer, but considering it is hoppier than even your typical pale ale, it is much more an IPA than it is an ESB. The best offering from Rogue, IMO.

Men ok.

This beer pours a semi opaque orange brown with a one finger soapy white head that doesn’t last long. Nose is citrus fruit. Flavor is tart citrus hops with a nice bitterness. A bit of effervescence. A nice mix of subtle and bold. A nice bitter although this is not a favored style.

6-pack from Total Wine, River Edge, NJ...pours cloudy amber, white head...bit of a sour citrus smell...taste is the same with some sugary apricot, hops...one of the better bitters I’ve had.

Cloudy orange with a white head. Smells hoppy. Crisp mild flavor. Malt is lacking, could be more balanced, nothing special.

Pours a cloudy orange with thick white head. Aroma is pleasant of hops and citrus, but surprisingly not strong. Taste isn’t what I expected in the strength or mouthfeel, but a decent brew nonetheless. I will be looking for a FRESH version of this to see if I just got an older batch.

22oz bottle from Evanston, WY. Pours a cloudy orange color with a large foamy white head. The aroma is very nice; loads of ripe hops, citrus and some marmalade. The flavor is similar; a light bitter hop initially, rich citrus hops, some light fruitiness, marmalade and lemon zest. Very nice. A smooth and full mouthfeel. A great example of the style.

Pours a slighly cloudy amber colour with a foamy white head. Aroma is of citrusy hops. Taste is wonderful - full-bodied, sweetness of fruit masks the mild spiciness from the alcohol. Absolutely delicious.
