Commercial Description:
Brutal combines Oregon hops with English Malts. The Oregon grown Crystal hop is a triploid variety developed from the German Hallertau aroma hop variety with contributions from Cascade, Brewers Gold, and Early Green. Crystal is the only hop used in brewing Brutal and it provides a massive amount of aroma without dry-hopping. The English malts used are floor malted Pipkin (a mellow cross of Maris Otter and Warboys, from an English company called Beeston), Cara Vienna and Cara Wheat.

The guy on the bottle has been staring at me over top of his sunglasses for a long time, so I have to try this one. Pours a murky yellow-ish orange with a bright white head that clings to my glass. Aroma is intense, slightly sweet, tuns of citrus (mainly orange and a lot of grapefruit), floral notes, and caramel. Flavor of grapefruit and orange, some sweetness that may be caramel, peach, floral esters on the palate as well. Mouthfeel is good, proper carbonation and not cloying. I had my doubts, but I really like this beer!

(Rating #2147)

12oz bottle. Pours an off-white head with an amber gold body. Smells of pine and caramel. Tastes the same.

Bottle from Booze Bros. in Reno, NV. Poured a reddish orange with a strong hop aroma. I was expecting a harsh hit of bitter on the palate, but the hops were well controlled. Medium-bodied beer with a dry finish.

The aroma is a floral hop smell, wirh a caramel malt sweetness in the background. The taste is identical. Very enjoyable caramel/brown sugar sweetness up front, sliding into a nice clean bittering from the floral hops toward the back. The finish is nice and clean, and has a pleasant hoppy bitterness. Medium mouthfeel. Very drinkable; I could easily do 5 or 6 of these. Excellent beer overall.

Bottle - Amber in colour with a slight haze. Fresh grassy and hoppy aroma with grapefruit and tea. Very hoppy and bitter taste with grapefruit and lemon. Very hoppy but not overwhelmingly so. Good stuff.

What an amazing bitter. Though topped by the Younger, stands out as a wonderful paring of a variety of hops and malts

Draft at Brews Cafe, Jan 2008. I first had BB in Oregon at various Rogue Public Houses back in 2002. It blew me away back then, and while my tastes have increasingly leaned to the hoppy side of things since then, somewhat leaving BB behind, it is still a solid beer. First I must state that fresh on draft is FAR SUPERIOR to the bottle. It is pale in color and slightly hazy. Good solid hop aroma. The flavor is hoppy and refreshing, although the body a little thin. The aroma builds as the beer warms and opens up. I have to keep reminding myself that it isn’t an IPA and rate as such. Good beer, can be very good when fresh.
