Commercial Description:
Brutal combines Oregon hops with English Malts. The Oregon grown Crystal hop is a triploid variety developed from the German Hallertau aroma hop variety with contributions from Cascade, Brewers Gold, and Early Green. Crystal is the only hop used in brewing Brutal and it provides a massive amount of aroma without dry-hopping. The English malts used are floor malted Pipkin (a mellow cross of Maris Otter and Warboys, from an English company called Beeston), Cara Vienna and Cara Wheat.

Reviewed 12/20/2008 (bottle): Pours a huge foamy head, whitish, diminishing. Body is very clear golden amber body. Very hoppy grapefruity aroma. Hoppy taste but a big balancing malty taste, some nuttiness like hazelnut. Nice taste, would make a good session beer. Very carbonated mouthfeel. Drying aftertaste. A little much after a bit.

A solid beer in the mold of an IPA. First had at the Portland, OR Rogue pub in 2002, then later at the brewery in Newport. This beer is pretty balanced with a solid malt body that finishes on the light hoppy side. A nice beer, although in 2009, it is a tad outdated.

Pours a cloudy reddish orange with a 2 finger light tan head that leaves sparse lacing. Aroma is citrus hops, bread crust, planty hops, caramel malt and peppery and bubblegum yeastiness. Flavor is citrus and pale malts, biscuity sweet malt, citrus hops, planty hops. Finish is medium bitter with a mineral note and lingering citrus. Good stuff.

Bottle. Pours clear amber golden. Smells of citrus with a little apple and caramel. Medium body. The malt profile is subdued, but it has a strong bitter hop flavor from start to finish, and a bitter aftertaste. Medium dry, slight pine resin flavor. Almost an IPA.
