daknole (2802), Plantation, Florida, USA Jul 19, 2008 I have had ths a number of times but forgot to rate it...here goes! Pours an cloudy amberish color. head is hoppy and some malt too. Hops hit you pretty hard, but this isn’t the most amazing IPA by any stretch. I wish the body were fuller and richer. Still pretty good though. elihapa (1033), Honolulu, California, USA Jul 18, 2008 Poured from bomber. Appears a murky dark apricot. Nice light fruit aroma with some malt. Palate is full bodied, fairly thick, and lingers long. Initial flavor is strong of bitter hops and citrus, but following this there are really delicious sweeter flavors (some butterscotch and milk chocolate?) that balance and complexify this brew. I won’t lie, I really enjoyed Brutal Bitter. This beer is far more interesting to drink than any of Rogue’s ambers, yet the flavors really don’t try to do too much. This beer does ESBs right. Indulgence (141), Ajo, Arizona, USA Jul 18, 2008 Bomber: I had high expectations for this one since I like ESBs and trying a lot of them. I’ve also had many of the other Rogue brews. I prefer the Anderson Valley ESB over this one, as for American ESBs go. It’s a nice beer, but just didn’t have a strong British malt backbone for me. Sorry, I’ll stick with Fullers. JustinFromAL (112), Birmingham, Alabama, USA Jul 16, 2008 Bottle, Pours cloudy golden amber. Small white head that hangs around. Aroma is bright and sweet. Fruity. Hops just explode in your mouth, there is a sweet flavor, but a nice bitter finish. Make no mistake, this is a great beer! posikyle (165), Alabama, USA Jul 16, 2008 I dunno, I didn’t think it was as great as everyone thinks it is. Nice brown color, malty aroma, but I thought the mouthfeel and taste were pretty watered down. Probably wouldn’t buy again. Changed (161), Ithaca, New York, USA Jul 15, 2008 22oz bomber (hell yes). Pours a beautiful cloudy amber (a lot like apple-cider). I bought this beer not realizing it was an ESB; because I’ve never enjoyed an ESB before, I thought I’d hate it. WRONG! This is an ESB/IPA hybrid that is extremely enjoyable. Aroma is reminiscent of Stone IPA, but the taste is different. At first, tastes a bit like bread, with a bunch of sweetness, but quickly becomes more like an IPA. Nice bitter IPA finish. Lots of grapefruit presence (which is always enjoyable). This will be my go-to "ESB" from here on out! kmeves (1080), Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, USA Jul 15, 2008 Pours a semi cloudy light amber with a smallish white head. Aroma is nicely bitter with just a hint of sweet. Flavor is a bunch of bitter grapefruit hoppiness but not too much as to cause unbalance. Great bitter!. WallyWalrus (205), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Jul 13, 2008 12oz bottle. Pours a hazy orange-amber with a thin off-white head. Aroma is light and sweet, with citrus, apricot, and syrupy hops alongside a bit of caramelized malt. Taste is fairly full for a bitter, with initial flavors of syrupy hops and apricot giving way to a bitter middle flavor of citrus, coriander, and more hops, followed by a somewhat sweet aftertaste of honey and spice. Really more of a bizzare IPA/bitter hybrid than anything else, but with good results.
