jjuf1853 (467), Land O Lakes, Florida, USA Apr 29, 2008 Bottle pours a hazy amber with a foamy tan head. Aroma is bitter, hoppy, sweet, and slightly floral. Good balance in the flavor between the hops and malts. jeffwilliams11 (310), hooterville, Michigan, USA Apr 26, 2008 pours slightly hazy copper in color. aroma is refreshingly floral hoppy. malt and hops are well balanced, i wouldn’t say its ’brutally’ bitter, but very tasty. csbosox (1076), Prairie Village, Kansas, USA Apr 21, 2008 22oz bottle. Aroma is floral and citrus hops combined with rich, nutty, toffee-like malt. Very delicate, but very nice. Orange/copper colored with a smallish head. Good clarity. Initial flavor is very malty with nuttiness, light caramel, light toffee, and a subtle toastiness all present and a spicy, floral, light citrus finish. Bitterness nicely balances the malt, though the bitterness might be a little more pronounced. The malt bill is very nice, it really does highlight the flavor of a good English malt and the Crystal is a nice choice to compliment the malt, with it’s great flavor profile and somewhat subdued nature. The mouthfeel is very nice. The maltiness is there, but the beer is well attenuated. The carbonation level seems lower than usual, which is to style and certainly helps the drinkability. This would be a fine session beer, though at 6.2%, it might be an abbreviated session. milljam (562), Norman, Oklahoma, USA Apr 20, 2008 Updated: Apr 11, 2009Pours a hazy rust with a deep head. Aroma of fruity hops...citrusy, with hints of herbal and floral....similar to hallertau. Flavor is equally as hoppy.....citrus and herbal.....underlying notes of malt...slightly sweet. Bitterness is prevalent throughout, although not overwhelming. Wheat malt rounds out the mouthfeel nicely. A great take on the bitter beer line. 17thfloor (1402), Chicago, Illinois, USA Apr 16, 2008 Updated: Apr 18, 2008Pours hazy orange/amber with a large sudsy/frothy white head. Strong bitter hop aroma... crystal obviously. Some sweet malt and spice as well. Sweet malt, slightly spicy and lots of bitter hops, but also fresh. Definitely some grapefruit. It easy to tell that the wheat malt really lightens up the syrupiness found in other ESB’s. Watery body with zero carbonation; has that Rogue juciness. Great English beer with an American twist. smashteroid (227), USA Apr 13, 2008 Served cold from 22oz. bottle. This was the first Rogue I ever consumed, and I haven’t had it too often since then so a lot of this is from memory. It usually poured an orange color that was somewhere between translucent and opaque, with a foamy white head. The aroma was earthy with a large wafting smell of hops. It wasn’t as well-balanced as I would have liked, but it definitely lives up to its name as a "brutal bitter." The bitterness lingers, too, which could be a good thing or a bad thing depending on your preference. KnN (712), Greenbelt, Maryland, USA Apr 13, 2008 Pours a hazy orange color. Big hop aroma, but for all that not nearly as hopped in the flavor as I expected. Actually very well balanced. A little sweet? Lots of citrus and with a good hop kick. Man, that’s nice. hemlock (1), Etobicoke, Ontario, Canada does not count Apr 10, 2008 Opening this bottle unleashed a fragrance similar to the end of boil of a well hopped wort. I found this to be an alternative to the epic brew Liberty Ale by Anchor. Obviously whole fresh hops have been used in this wonderfully bitter and floral brew. I am impressed with the crystal hops. Has some precipitate in the bottle. Might be ok for my homebrew, but not sure this is the intention of a bottled blend.
Nice artwork on the painted bottles.
