Commercial Description:
Brutal combines Oregon hops with English Malts. The Oregon grown Crystal hop is a triploid variety developed from the German Hallertau aroma hop variety with contributions from Cascade, Brewers Gold, and Early Green. Crystal is the only hop used in brewing Brutal and it provides a massive amount of aroma without dry-hopping. The English malts used are floor malted Pipkin (a mellow cross of Maris Otter and Warboys, from an English company called Beeston), Cara Vienna and Cara Wheat.

Bottle... Poured a brilliant, foggy orange with a huge white head that lasted forever. Aroma of malt and bread. Palate is thick with carbonation, lots of hops and barley-grain flavors and some mild alcohol presence. Smooth and easy to drink.

12 oz bottle into a pint glass. Pours a hazy, golden orange with a nice off white head. Smells of malty hops. Not too sweet, but very hoppy. Taste is smooth with hops present. Much more bitter than traditional esb. Does not register as anything special, despite hefty price tag. Nice feel in mouth, but nothing special.

22oz purchased from LCBO in Grimsby. Nice, but slightly restrained hoppy aroma. First taste is rich, with nice fruity hops. Very nicely balanced. Pretty much exactly what I was hoping for. More fruitiness in the hops than most IPAs, but not lacking in overall hop bitterness. Interesting to read that the only hop used is Crystal from Oregon.

Bottle pours a hazy amber with a foamy tan head. Aroma is bitter, hoppy, sweet, and slightly floral. Good balance in the flavor between the hops and malts.

pours slightly hazy copper in color. aroma is refreshingly floral hoppy. malt and hops are well balanced, i wouldn’t say its ’brutally’ bitter, but very tasty.

22oz bottle. Aroma is floral and citrus hops combined with rich, nutty, toffee-like malt. Very delicate, but very nice. Orange/copper colored with a smallish head. Good clarity. Initial flavor is very malty with nuttiness, light caramel, light toffee, and a subtle toastiness all present and a spicy, floral, light citrus finish. Bitterness nicely balances the malt, though the bitterness might be a little more pronounced. The malt bill is very nice, it really does highlight the flavor of a good English malt and the Crystal is a nice choice to compliment the malt, with it’s great flavor profile and somewhat subdued nature. The mouthfeel is very nice. The maltiness is there, but the beer is well attenuated. The carbonation level seems lower than usual, which is to style and certainly helps the drinkability. This would be a fine session beer, though at 6.2%, it might be an abbreviated session.
