Commercial Description:
Brutal combines Oregon hops with English Malts. The Oregon grown Crystal hop is a triploid variety developed from the German Hallertau aroma hop variety with contributions from Cascade, Brewers Gold, and Early Green. Crystal is the only hop used in brewing Brutal and it provides a massive amount of aroma without dry-hopping. The English malts used are floor malted Pipkin (a mellow cross of Maris Otter and Warboys, from an English company called Beeston), Cara Vienna and Cara Wheat.

I tried this beer on March 6, 2008 after purchasing from my local LCBO outlet. The beer poured a hazy coppery-red colour with a large generous fluffy off-white head. The aroma was extremely hoppy. A lot of floral perfumey hints such as pine, and grapefruit. The mouthfeel was medium-bodied, fairly carbonated, and bitter. The flavour was divine. Almost like my morning grapefruit in beer form. My first Rogue beer, and it didn’t disappoint.

Finally got some of this in at the LCBO in Ontario. Amazing. Nice copper-orangy colour, hoppy citris aroma. Bitter fruity tatse, some hops. Love it.

Light caramel sweetness in the aroma. Flavor starts dirty, but finish clean and moderately bitter & dry. The finish is fairly lengthy as well, which is nice. Solid beer.

Bottled. Beer is hazy, vibrant, medium orange-apricot. Lots of tiny apricot-scrub like particles hanging in suspension. Head is large, off-white, frothy,
The aroma is malty with light notes of toasted grain; Hoppy with light notes of herb and peppery apricot; Yeasty with light-to-moderate notes of dough.
The flavor is lightly sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter, finish is moderately-to-heavily bitter, trace acidic. Finish feels slightly metallic.
The body is medium, the texture is watery and the carbonation is average.
I’ll pass.

The color was a light, slightly hazy, golden/organge. The head was thick, creamy, and frothy. The aroma was hops, light citris, and grass . The flavor was bitter/waxy, floral, hoppy, and grassy. The palate was nicely carbonated. The finish was bitter.

Pours dark gold/amber with a frothy consistent head. Aroma of sweet malts and hops. Smells like a pale ale. Taste is true to a bitter. Nice malt start with a bitter hop finish. Well balanced beer.

Hazy dark amber pour and generous bubbly head. Mellow fruity/floral hops made me think this would be sweet, but true to its name it was nice and bitter. The flavors weren’t super complex... soapy at times, but I like it overall. Very floral/bitter--not much pine. Maybe some grapefruit rind on the tongue? Thin on the palate. Good if yer lookin for bitter...

Had a vast complexion of hops in this one. I could taste the hops burried deep in the beer and also a bit resting on top of the beer that weren’t quite all the way isomerized. Good ale for sure and I’d probably buy again.
