Commercial Description:
Brutal combines Oregon hops with English Malts. The Oregon grown Crystal hop is a triploid variety developed from the German Hallertau aroma hop variety with contributions from Cascade, Brewers Gold, and Early Green. Crystal is the only hop used in brewing Brutal and it provides a massive amount of aroma without dry-hopping. The English malts used are floor malted Pipkin (a mellow cross of Maris Otter and Warboys, from an English company called Beeston), Cara Vienna and Cara Wheat.

bottle. pour reminds me of a cloudy homemade iced tea. smells of citrusy hops. flavor is mostly of hops. pine, lemon, and orange. big hop finish. as noted previously sort of a one note beer but the one note it shows is quite enjoyable.

Off orange with decent white head. Hops stand out in the aroma, with a little malt hiding out in the back. Hop flavor is really strong grassy and citrusy. Unable to taste anything else, somewhat one dimensional, but still a good session beer.

pours a tangerine amber with a thin white head. aroma is a balanced malt/hop, with toasty candy notes and light fruit sweetness. taste is a little hay, some apricot, orange rind, light fruit. nicely rounded. moderate carbonation. a little thick/chewy. a wave of heavy bitterness hits at the end but doesn’t last, though a light pleasing bitter taste is left. very nice bitter, if you like bitters, you have to give this one a shot!

Bottle. Appearance: Cloudy orange, thin off white head. Aroma: Very sweet citrus and floral hops. Palate: Medium. Flavor: Floral hops, a bit grassy, citrus, grapefruit, good malt to balance. Overall: This beer has a very pleasant bitter finish. Another good beer from rogue.

12 oz bottle purchased at Spirits. Pours a solid orange with a large white frothy head. Citrussy hop aroma with an undertone of malts. Medium mouthfeel with lively carbonation but an overall smoothness is the dominant factor on this one. Flavor of malts, flowers and a slight bitter finish. Wow a beer from Rogue that I actually like, what next Al Sharpton saying something intelligent.

cloudy copper pour with slight white head. hoppy, fruity aroma. Clean, bitter apricot flavor. a little oily mouth feel - but a great, high quality brew. pretty much an IPA.

Smells earthy and hoppy. pours a very cloudy orange with some sediment, has a great offwhite head that lasts and leaves tons of lacing. Very hoppy flavor, I was expecting less because of the moderate 59 UBU rating on the bottle. The malts are a lot more subdued than I was expecting but this is a very nice tasting grapefruity hoppy type of beer. Very IPAish to me despite the ESB label, but it’s a nice beer nonetheless. I still think rogue stuff is too expensive when I can get stone and bear republic for 3.29 instead of the 4.99-5.99 rogue price tag.

Pours from the bomber hazy orange with a rich head. Head stays around a long time (you can pour it with no head at all .. but where’s the fun in that). Nice mouthfeel, chewy but the malt is there and the beer is fairly dry. Hops are interesting, citrus, some grassy flavors and muted grapefruit. Alcohol is nicely hidden. Pretty darned good ... I was not sure what the beer would be like given that they’re only using crystal, but in this beer it works pretty well.
