Commercial Description:
Brutal combines Oregon hops with English Malts. The Oregon grown Crystal hop is a triploid variety developed from the German Hallertau aroma hop variety with contributions from Cascade, Brewers Gold, and Early Green. Crystal is the only hop used in brewing Brutal and it provides a massive amount of aroma without dry-hopping. The English malts used are floor malted Pipkin (a mellow cross of Maris Otter and Warboys, from an English company called Beeston), Cara Vienna and Cara Wheat.

Bottle.12oz. Pours a hazy orangy amber with thin white head. Malty nose with some hoppiness and vomit aromas. At this point I’m beginning to wonder if I got a bad bottle. A little grapefruit and citrus smells come in upon further inspection. Flavor is lightly acidic with notes of sweet honey coming through. Floral and spicy hops dance around on the tongue as well. Finish is dry and moderately bitter. Still leaving a feeling of fresh vomit in the back of my throat, this thing is laced with stomach acid or something. I like bitterness probably more than the next guy and I sure as hell enjoy hops and I thought for sure I’d like this beer. I’m not sure what the hell is going on with this beer but it has things in it that suck.

Bottle - 12 oz. Hazy chestnut body topped with a thin off-white foamy head. Wonderful hoppy aroma with pineapple and melon notes. Taste is sharp and dominated by hops. Ends with a long and robust bitter finish. Very good example of ESB, and another excellent beer from Rogue as well.

Bottle at Bishops Arms, Avenyn, Göteborg, Sweden. Deep amber, almost copper, with a medium off-white creamy head. Hop dominated aroma with piney and floral notes, medium bodied, quite bitter. Good but with a weak malt backbone for this type of beer.

Pours a dark gold with a touch of almost brown with a sizeable white head. Nose is Extremely hoppy and super sweet. Flavor is thick with hops and a very slight bite. Just barely bitter as the hops take over the flavor profile, but don’t make it too unbearable with too hoppy a tone. Mouthfeel is good on carbonation and this one is extremely drinkable. This is the 13th beer I have reviewed from Rogue and yet again they deliver. I just want to try more, and more, and more...

This beer is great! I love sampling beers that I haven’t had before and this caught my eye. Brutal Bitter......Sounds interesting doesn’t it? very hoppy taste with citrus tones as well. I was very impressed when i took my first sip of the Brutal Bitter. I swallowed my sip, took a deep breath, and let it out slowly. An incredibly refreshing brew! Another winner put out by the good people at Rogue.

22. Great little session beer without a doubt. Pours murky toffee-ish dark amber color, sudsy white head that falls to film before you get much of a chance to think about it. Occasional condensation-like drops of lace here and there on the way down. Modest nose; not much to say: some light pacman ale-y fruitiness, some little orange-y citric hop notes. Grainy medium body with active carb, plenty more fruity bits: hoppy orange pith, yeasty general fruitiness (hints of peach?), some light biscuit and very light grain husk notes. Quenching and strong enough to stand up to food--awesome utility beer. Jack Joyce couldn’t piss me off much more than he does given that I know him only as his occasional customer, but even despite that, I love this beer and need to grab it more often.

Poured a stunning, hazy orange/copper color with a thick creamy head that lasted till the end. The nose was an intense perfume of grapefruit, florals, citrus zest and piney resins. Possibly the most satisfying nose i’ve ever encountered in an ale. The taste was a hoppy orgasm. Lip smacking bitterness starts as grapefruity hops storm their way into forground. Toasty malts softly coddle the tounge as citrusy orange zest ricochets back in. All of the flavors combine with symphonic perfection. The finish was a huge, bitch-slap of hoppiness with a final ghostly apperition of grapefruit pucker. There’s nothing "brutal" about this beer. Without a doubt one of the best beers on the planet. Period.
