Commercial Description:
Brutal combines Oregon hops with English Malts. The Oregon grown Crystal hop is a triploid variety developed from the German Hallertau aroma hop variety with contributions from Cascade, Brewers Gold, and Early Green. Crystal is the only hop used in brewing Brutal and it provides a massive amount of aroma without dry-hopping. The English malts used are floor malted Pipkin (a mellow cross of Maris Otter and Warboys, from an English company called Beeston), Cara Vienna and Cara Wheat.

(Bottle) Pours a hazy golden color with a copious white head. Strong, hoppy aroma. Taste is more malty, with notes of bread and some smooth caramel. Full, almost oily mouthfeel. Beautiful lacing and good balance. A little more hoppy than I expected, but an excellent beer nevertheless!

First taste 5/24/07. This one was a pleasant surprise. Pours a translucent gold with a moderate white head of micro-bubbles and some lacing. Aroma is very hoppy with pine oil and a small bit of malt. Flavor follows those same lines. Just enough malt to take the sharp edge off the hops. Very well balanced for an ESB. Excellent offerring from Rogue. Strong recommendation.

Pours with a nice small head. Lots of hops on the nose. I am kind of glad that this isn’t a ridiculous hop brew, which by the name kind of suggests. Taste is of a nice english ale with a good balance of the hops. Smooth. I thought this would be way over the top, but it is really tasty and easy drinkin’.

With a name like Brutal Bitter I was expecting something to bite my tongue just a little harder than this did. All in all a good brew. Ill back up the copper colour and a short lasting head. I will not back up the sweet. I enjoyed it but I think I will enjoy it next time even more, when I’m not expecting anything.

The 22 ounce bomber poured a cloudy gold with a big, white head. Big mouthfilling malt flavor. The hops come in a litle later to balance th malt leaving a well balanced brew. I’m not used to a cloudy bitter, nor a bitter with a big malt flavor. It may not be true to style but it is good.

Pours with a nice fluffy off white head. Is slightly hoppy and has a nice smooth feel, but I can’t really taste the maltiness at all. I can’t get much else out of this one other than the hops....but I like hops...so I guess that’s ok.

Big bottle. pours a copper colour with a bubbly short lasting beige head. Sweet hoppy and bit spiced aroma. The flavour is very sweet, quite hoppy with citrus. Sweet and bitter long lasting finish.

22oz bomber. Pours a deep, somewhat hazy copper with a pillowy off-white head and thick lacing. Nose is piney hops with some biscuity malt. Taste is more hoppy than a traditional ESB, but maltier than a Pale Ale. Mouth-feel is smooth and finish is bitter. So far, my favorite beer from Rogue. Wish I could get this in a 6-pack.
