drewbeerme (2224), Chicago, Illinois, USA May 15, 2007 22oz bottle. pours semi-hazy gold with white head. nose has subtle biscuit, cookie, and citrus hops. flavor is balanced and loaded with cookie, caramel, toffee, with a citrus hop bite. carbination is low-medium. alcohol is well hidden. mouthfeel is full. a nice american-version of the style, i feel it’s rare that i get to say, "well done, Rogue." radagast83 (1273), Fairfax, Virginia, USA May 13, 2007 12 oz bottle. Pours a dark copper color. The name is pretty accurate - very bitter. Aroma is hoppy and has notes of citrus. Rich flavor of hops and malts. A very hoppy beer for an ESB, but it’s great none the less. RedHaze (370), Where the hell am I?, Nebraska, USA May 11, 2007 22oz bottle.
Pours a hazy coppery orange with a one finger head that settles slowly to a nice cap. The lacing is thick and very sticky, leaving behind a nice sheeting of lace behind.
Smell; lots of toasted malts, with some caramel and some mild hints of brown sugar. The hops are evident, but not quite as strong as I was expecting, with some grapefruit and oranges.
Taste; the hops hit a little more upfront in the flavor that they did in the aroma, with grapefruit, oranges and a little bit of pine. Bu then the malts to an outstanding job of balancing it all out with a nice biscuity, caramel with a little sweetness on the back end. I was expected to be blasted with hops, and this is a bit closer to an ESB than I was expecting from Rogue. I’m a bit surprised that this is so balanced.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a nice rich/smooth creaminess, and the drinkabilty is reall great for me. RCL (1443), Waltham, Massachusetts, USA May 10, 2007 This is what all summer beers should be. Rich and flavorful without being heavy, cloying or scorchingly hoppy. I coud drink this all day.
Explosion of citrusy hops in the aroma and rich malt flavor. Just superb. dkoonce (880), People’s Republic of Athens, Ohio, USA May 10, 2007 Can’t believe that I haven’t rated this yet. Pours a true amber, with a tall loose off-white head. Heavy hop aroma. Fairly bitter, with a good balance of malt as an offset. Fairly light body. verstellung77 (16), Charleston, West Virginia, USA May 1, 2007 12oz Bottle 42F
Pours hazy amber....head deminishes rather quickly. Great mouth feel, great flavour. Great beer. Very enjoyable. The Crystal Hops are strong and lingering but stay at a very enjoyable level, though more like a IPA than an ESP, IMO
Very nice beer...a little steep in price, but for what you get...mmmmmmm...yummy ghawener (952), San Salvador, El Salvador Apr 30, 2007 Bottle: This beer has a larger head than any capuccino I’ve seen! Heavy, great lacing that clings to the glass all the way to the last sip. Taste is nicely bitter with presence of dark chocolate, coffee and somkey. Another great one from Rogues. xav33 (313), Midland, MI, Michigan, USA Apr 29, 2007 Rogue Brutal Bitter
22 oz bomber
Moderate pour in an English pint
Recent brewing, enjoyed 04/07.
Poured a slightly hazy dark amber with a large frothy somewhat diminishing white head with fair lacing.
Smelt of moderate caramel, pineapple and lemon.
Taste was upfront strong bitter spruce and grass and moderate sweet caramel followed by a harsh spruce and dry leaves and light sweet citrus on an average length finish.
Palate was light to medium bodied, creamy, softly carbonated and strongly astringent.
Overall, this is a very satisfying beer in terms of taste. Strong flavors and aromas, brutally bitter as expected. Good stuff.
