Commercial Description:
Brutal combines Oregon hops with English Malts. The Oregon grown Crystal hop is a triploid variety developed from the German Hallertau aroma hop variety with contributions from Cascade, Brewers Gold, and Early Green. Crystal is the only hop used in brewing Brutal and it provides a massive amount of aroma without dry-hopping. The English malts used are floor malted Pipkin (a mellow cross of Maris Otter and Warboys, from an English company called Beeston), Cara Vienna and Cara Wheat.

brutal? no way. of course, i tried this while on an extreme hop kick. this is just an excellent session ESB. would make a better 6-pack than 22oz bottle.

THIS is what Rogue is really about and brings to fullness the base behind the Rogue’s I’ve had. Surprisingly, this one wasn’t as bitter as I (a non PA/IPA guy) was expecting from a brewery that has freely used hops in other selections. The color was light and the head bursted out of the bottle upon opening. Definite citrus and piney aromas and flavor. Not a bad beer, especially if you like bitter / hoppy brews. Re-rate, 9/06, as a special bottling, "Rogue Maxs Taphouse 20th Anniversary Bitter Ale," and the experience was comparable, some floral notes in the aroma, and citrus hops were most dominant in the flavor. Pretty close to an IPA if you ask me.

Rogue definitely impressed me with this beer. I’m definitely hard to impress when it comes to styles like bitters and IPAs, but I like this beer. Bitterness is well balanced by a fullness of flavor. I’ll come back and flesh out this review when I try it again with note-taking materials available.

Bottle: Poured a light hazy brown color ale with a huge bubbly head with slightly better then average retention. Aroma of cirtusy hops is clearly dominant. Taste is huge on cirtusy hops, which provide some bitterness, but is well back by some malt. This beer really seems to be halfway between an ESB and an IPA. Interesting and would definitely like top try this again.

650 mL bottle. Clear golden honey color with fizzy white head. Aroma of hops and grain. Very bright palate. Sweet malty taste followed by a good bitter bite and a crisp finish.

Aroma – Nice English malt with a slight bitter hops in the nose.
Appearance – Light Brown color, Nice head and clear.
Flavor – A malty flavor with a light hops in the back. This was a very nice English bitter.
Palate – Nice Mouthfeel, good texture with a dry finish.
Overall – A English Bitter with a good dry feel and a nice flavor of hops.

First taste 5/24/07. This one was a pleasant surprise. Pours a translucent gold with a moderate white head of micro-bubbles and some lacing. Aroma is very hoppy with pine oil and a small bit of malt. Flavor follows those same lines. Just enough malt to take the sharp edge off the hops. Very well balanced for an ESB. Excellent offerring from Rogue. Strong recommendation.
