Commercial Description:
Brutal combines Oregon hops with English Malts. The Oregon grown Crystal hop is a triploid variety developed from the German Hallertau aroma hop variety with contributions from Cascade, Brewers Gold, and Early Green. Crystal is the only hop used in brewing Brutal and it provides a massive amount of aroma without dry-hopping. The English malts used are floor malted Pipkin (a mellow cross of Maris Otter and Warboys, from an English company called Beeston), Cara Vienna and Cara Wheat.

Perhaps my first experience with crystal hops, and now one of my favorite Rogue’s. Fresh, grapefruity and piney/resiny hop flavor and aroma. Sufficient maltiness (pleasant surprise from Rogue). Really an AIPA, not a bitter.

Bottle @ Beer Palace, Oslo. Low coarse off-white head. Body is foggy golden brown. Light bready malt aroma with a scent of lemony hops. Taste has a quite harsh bitterness and a light sourish malt profile, probably since this is an old bottle past its prime... Well-bodied. Bitter ending. Re-rate pending.

Pours dark hazy orange with nice sized soapy beige head that turns very patchy. Nice spruce and perfume hops on the nose with light caramel malt in the background. Medium body with mostly soft carbonation. Starts with a dry toffee-like malt that is then joined by some spicy hops. The finish is a union of many flavors - generous dry toffee malt and lots of hops elements (sprice, light wood, citrus, etc). This reminds me of a British ESB mixed with West Coast.

Deep amber that pours a big head of just off white. Grassy citrus hop aroma. Hop bitterness dominates the flavor and continues into the finish. At the finish is the only hint of any maltiness in this beer. Excellent ESB.

Bottle: Poured an orange burnt amber with a off white head. Aroma is citrus and malt. Taste is bitter hops and mellowing malt. Very balanced and yet bitter enough to please the taste buds.

Poured copper with a lasting white head. Mild citric hop aroma with some earthy notes. Flavour is caramel / toffee balanced with hops. Theres a definate american influence, but not a bad try at an english styled strong bitter.
