Commercial Description:
Brutal combines Oregon hops with English Malts. The Oregon grown Crystal hop is a triploid variety developed from the German Hallertau aroma hop variety with contributions from Cascade, Brewers Gold, and Early Green. Crystal is the only hop used in brewing Brutal and it provides a massive amount of aroma without dry-hopping. The English malts used are floor malted Pipkin (a mellow cross of Maris Otter and Warboys, from an English company called Beeston), Cara Vienna and Cara Wheat.

It’s a varm golden beer with a nice head. the aroma has wonderful notes of aroma hops, fruit and a bit of caramel. The flavour is as expected simply wonderful. It has a lot of aroma hops, caramel and a delicious, refreshing, crisp, spicy and complex bitterness. A small work of art in bottle, and IMO not at all brutal in it’s bitterness.

Big bottle. pours a copper colour with a bubbly short lasting beige head. Sweet hoppy and bit spiced aroma. The flavour is very sweet, quite hoppy with citrus. Sweet and bitter long lasting finish.

Bottle, bought @ Vinens Verden, Odense.
Pours a great amber with a slight haze. Fine, creamy, white head. Good duration. Aroma is hoppy, lots of pine and grapefruit. Some good, clean maltiness as well. Medium carbonation, fine creaminess. Flavour has a very nice malt base, some sharpish hops. Relatively bitter, some caramel and a good, lasting flavour of pine and fruity hops. Nice.

22 oz bottle-pours a ceamy offwhite head that laces with cloudy orange/copper color. Aroma is crisp hops. Taste is far from just crisp hops. It’s also smokey caramel malt that doesn’t show up in the aroma, but also doesn’t come across as that well balanced either. Good carbonation. Good, but not great beer.

Hazy orange-copper body wears a good sized off-white foam, mostly lasting and displaying good lacing. Floral grapefruity citric nose, cascade like (though I suspect there’s more than that) reminds more of an IPA than anything else, but it has this earthy and sweet maltiness that reminds me of lost coast indica. It is indeed surprisingly bitter in mouth, but there’s a fair amount malty husky sweetness to keep it balanced. Finishes very dry, I’d be curious to try a fresh one as this bottle has quite a few months on it. Moderately high carbonation enhances the bitterness I feel and might be a bit lower, but solid overall oily textured mouthfeel. Quite an original one which I enjoyed more than I expected to and is considered such a classic that I’m surprised it’s the first time I enjoy it.
