Commercial Description:
Brutal combines Oregon hops with English Malts. The Oregon grown Crystal hop is a triploid variety developed from the German Hallertau aroma hop variety with contributions from Cascade, Brewers Gold, and Early Green. Crystal is the only hop used in brewing Brutal and it provides a massive amount of aroma without dry-hopping. The English malts used are floor malted Pipkin (a mellow cross of Maris Otter and Warboys, from an English company called Beeston), Cara Vienna and Cara Wheat.

Cloudy amber with a beige head. Citrus, hops to the nose. Medium body with some carbonation. Taste was not as bitter as the name implied. A decent drink but not outstanding.

Draft at Jupiters in Champaign, IL. Pours a hazy orange amber with a dissipating off white head. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Aroma of floral hops and fruity esters. Flavor of toffee countered by a bold grapefruity bitterness. Semi dry hoppy finish that is not too clingy. Enjoyable.

Tap @ Cole’s. Rich copper, thin white head. Nose is slight fruit, bare dusty malt, a hint of pear. Flavor is caramel, undefined bitterness. Apple in the finish.

This is what I think of when I hear ESB. Others seem to lack in the bitter department of the name. This had it all. Nice orange color. White head. Hops are abundant throughout with the malt to shoulder them. Kudos.

The boastful head slowly melted away to reveal a golden amber hue. The aroma teases you like a reluctant stripper, giving you hints of what is to come and inviting you to give it a try. Smooth taste greets the mouth, soon the tastes of fruit leave you looking for Lifesavers in the bottom of the glass. Bitter, yes. Brutal? A better word is beautiful.

22z bottle. Orange-amber hue. White frothy head. Very floral in the nose and in the mouth. A lot of sweet hop in the nose also. Crisp, bitter flavor with a nice citrus note. Another quality Rogue product and a great Bitter.
