Commercial Description:
Brutal combines Oregon hops with English Malts. The Oregon grown Crystal hop is a triploid variety developed from the German Hallertau aroma hop variety with contributions from Cascade, Brewers Gold, and Early Green. Crystal is the only hop used in brewing Brutal and it provides a massive amount of aroma without dry-hopping. The English malts used are floor malted Pipkin (a mellow cross of Maris Otter and Warboys, from an English company called Beeston), Cara Vienna and Cara Wheat.

Pours a clear orange/amber with a thick, dense off-white head. Aroma is hoppy with a hint of grass. Taste is very earthy with plenty of hops, grapefruit, citrus, caramel and honey. Rock-solid malt background. Lingering bitter aftertaste and finish. Mouthfeel is very full, thick, round and creamy with moderate carbonation. Just glorious. Spotty lacing, great head retention. Can be considered an IPA in my opinion. Highly recommended.

(Bottle, BBE 08/09, at Hilpeä Hauki, Helsinki, on 2009-05-22) Amber and hazy. Small white head. Sweet and fruity aroma. Full bodied and dry palate with medium carbonation. Malts, bitterness, sweetness, hops, fruitiness, light roastedness and saltiness in taste. Bitter and malty aftertaste. A pleasant beer even though I think the age had already affected the taste.

Bottle. Pours a cloudy dull orange with a small light tan head. Aroma is quite hoppy- lots of citrus hops, slight fruitiness. Flavor is similar- citrus hops, apple skins, tropical fruits, sweet malt. Palate is a little weak. Sweet, fruity, tasty.

12 oz bottle at the Rake, 14th April 09. Hazy mid amber with a white head. Lively palate, tingles on the tongue. Very hoppy at first sip and as you drink more, you get a nice lingering bitterness, without any harshness. Overall an enjoyable and balanced beer.

Bomber: The pour was a hazy orange that almost glowed. The aroma was hops and citrus. The flavor was citrus, hops bitterness, a little sweet honey, and more bitterness. Just delicious. Not sure if it tops Fullers ESB but hey.. that doesn’t make it a bad beer. Very enjoyable.

Orange, cloudy, nice tannish head. Gentle citrus hop aroma. Big malty flavor, bith a big citrus hop flavor and bitterness. Full palate. This kindof defines its own catagory...

Color is a nice cloudy deep copper with a small head of tight ivory colored froth with incredible stitched lace rings. Smell is peachy citrus, dark orange hops, juicy and fat, great litlle piney freshness. Great hop nose. Taste starts of sweet malt and light wheat and heads for the hops soon there after with grapefruitish sweet bittering sour dryness and woody pine solidness. Whoa... this bittering hits heavy and late. I count nearly six to ten seconds before it decides to make its presense felt. Amazing. Feel is a quick thin start then a bit harsh, bold texture with a solid full body with a huge hop kick late. The name "Brutal Bitter" suits it. It takes some getting use to.

Bottle - 12 oz. Hazy chestnut body topped with a thin off-white foamy head. Wonderful hoppy aroma with pineapple and melon notes. Taste is sharp and dominated by hops. Ends with a long and robust bitter finish. Very good example of ESB, and another excellent beer from Rogue as well.
