Commercial Description:
Brutal combines Oregon hops with English Malts. The Oregon grown Crystal hop is a triploid variety developed from the German Hallertau aroma hop variety with contributions from Cascade, Brewers Gold, and Early Green. Crystal is the only hop used in brewing Brutal and it provides a massive amount of aroma without dry-hopping. The English malts used are floor malted Pipkin (a mellow cross of Maris Otter and Warboys, from an English company called Beeston), Cara Vienna and Cara Wheat.

Hazy dark amber pour and generous bubbly head. Mellow fruity/floral hops made me think this would be sweet, but true to its name it was nice and bitter. The flavors weren’t super complex... soapy at times, but I like it overall. Very floral/bitter--not much pine. Maybe some grapefruit rind on the tongue? Thin on the palate. Good if yer lookin for bitter...

Bottled. Beer is hazy, vibrant, medium orange-apricot. Lots of tiny apricot-scrub like particles hanging in suspension. Head is large, off-white, frothy,
The aroma is malty with light notes of toasted grain; Hoppy with light notes of herb and peppery apricot; Yeasty with light-to-moderate notes of dough.
The flavor is lightly sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter, finish is moderately-to-heavily bitter, trace acidic. Finish feels slightly metallic.
The body is medium, the texture is watery and the carbonation is average.
I’ll pass.

Bottle 2004. Hazy amber/orange color with a medium size white head. Sweet aroma of hops, grapefruit and biscuit malt. Flavor is mildly bitter/hoppy at first with a decent malt backbone for balance.

Bottle courtesy of an awesome girl: Hazy copper/amber colored body showing a streak of ruby/orange towards the middle of the glass and pale orange towards the edge, with a medium eggshell colored head. Aroma is light citrus/pine/spice, mostly hops, with some sweet buttery malts and a hint of yeast showing through. Taste is spicy/citrus/floral hops taste up front, though more than I would expect for an ESB it’s much less bitter than an IPA, opening up to notes of bitter tea, grass, straw, light toasted malt, dusty wheat, light lemon, and a hint of orange zest. Finishes dry & bitter, with hops sticking to the tongue long after the last sip and hint of waxy honeycomb as it warms. Medium bodied, though it fells very creamy and full in the mouth, moderate carbonation.

A decent brew. For an ESB it smelled very light on the hops. Aroma had lots of floral essence and grassy scents. The appearance was soemwhat cloudy orange with white foamy head. Floral flavors and weak hop flavor but big bitterness. Interesting to say the least. Wasn’t my favorite ESB but it was worth having.

Copper orange with a good head. Malty body with good hop blend. Little citrus...and good amount of bitter, but I don’t consider it brutally bitter. I’m a big IPA fan, so I liked the hoppy mixed with the big bitterness. Nice beer....
