Nose of ripe apricot and grassy hops, extremely rich malts. Very herbal and earthy. Malty caramel body, not too sweet, just the right amount of hops. The body is large but maintains drinkabliliy. This is a tasty beer, wonder why I didn’t like it much before. Why does it seem that just since it says bitter in the name it means that it’s bitter? It’s a brutal (meaning strong) bitter (meaning the lightly hopped british style). This is lighter hopped than most IPAs. Updated on 05/23/05. Orangey copper colour. Clean hoppy aroma. Oranges on the palate. The hops are not over the top and are well integrated. Sharp, crisp and fresh. Very juicy. Top drop.

An orange coloured beer with a nice hoppy bitter aroma. This is a tasty bitter with good hops and a little bit on the sweet side. I expected the taste to be brutal but instead found it pleasant, drinkable and understated. For me nowhere near as good as the Youngers. leaparsons (4748), Leicester, Leicestershire, England
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Aug 10, 2005 Cask, GBBF 05. Golden/orange with a creamy head. Aromas are caramel, spices, oranges, lemons - good hops. Flavours are sweet caramel and toffee malts with oranges and spices. Has a good level of bitterness namely citrus fruit pith. More caramel towards the finish followed by decent bitterness. More like all those USA IPAs and nothing like a bitter. Still good, though. DocLock (4648), Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA
| 5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 5/5 | 10/10 | 5/5 | 20/20 | Jun 13, 2004 Draft. This one blew me away. Pours dark straw/orangish with a nice head and lace. Aroma of huge hops, fruit, grapefruit, chardonnay, spiciness, and some malt. Tastes hoppy, fruity, with a nice crisp finish. The intense fruitiness and spiciness balanced the hops perfectly. For #700, I give you the 4th perfect score I have ever given. As a caveat, I have not rated, or drank, the bottled version. I had this on draft at the Green Leafe cafe in Williamsburg, and I have no deductions for this one. ChristianScheffel (4632), Odense, Denmark
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Jun 7, 2006 Amber with a lasting white head. Light malt aroma, apple, cinnamon. Some sweetness in the flavour, grapefruit tartness, and (excuse me) a brutal bitterness at the end. Leaves no doubt that this is an American bitter and not an English one, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
