The aroma is straight up hops and citrus with some toffee maltyness that begins to become more prominent as the beer warms. The flavour is a pretty good reflection of that, with lots of hops, and citrus zest up front and in the middle, with a bit of malty caramel back bone that breaks through at the end. A tasty beverage with a lightly dry finish. My favorite ESB so far, just wish I could buy a six pack of this stuff, instead of the bombers they sell at the LCBO. Rogue has yet to dissapoint me, a beer only for the brave though. Every beer I’ve had by them so far is a good smack in the face of hops. darn1207 (565), Tallahassee, Florida, USA

A pale IPA in color, but succeeds in living up to the brutal bitter name by being very hoppy. Very citrusy with just enough malt to balance the hops, but they know their place. A good beer. jimmack34 (567), Lancaster, Ohio, USA

Smells citrusy, sweet, and piney. Tastes piney, grassy, sweet, very citrusy, and slightly bready. Very long and strong bitter aftertaste. Lots of honey sweet malts balance this beer pretty well. verstellung77 (16), Charleston, West Virginia, USA

Pours hazy amber....head deminishes rather quickly. Great mouth feel, great flavour. Great beer. Very enjoyable. The Crystal Hops are strong and lingering but stay at a very enjoyable level, though more like a IPA than an ESP, IMO
Very nice beer...a little steep in price, but for what you get...mmmmmmm...yummy Gregis (1132), Shawnee, Kansas, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jul 5, 2008 Pours a hazy amber orange with a loose, frothy, ivory head that leaves behind wispy lace. The nose is of toasty, bready malt with solid backing notes of citrus, faint spruce/evergreen, and spicy/earthy hops. Light to medium-bodied with a quick transition to a solid, bitter-hopped finish. This stuff is an IPA masquerading as an ESB. The flavor profile starts like an ESB: toasted bready malt with just enough sweetness to counter the balancing hops. The "balancing" hops in this beer, however, push well beyond the midpoint of balance toward a big spruce-like, citric and lightly spicy hop profile that dominates the finish and the aftertaste. This is not your typical ESB, but to Rogue’s credit, there are plenty of "typical" ESBs out there already. This beer successfully stretches the parameters of the style by doubling the IBUs that you’ll find in most ESBs. The result is an exceptionally drinkable brew for those, like myself, who enjoy ESBs and also love big hoppy IPAs. I have to admit that I’m pretty geeked about this beer, primarily because it’s the first locally available year-round brew that I’ve given a "4" or better to in over 300 ratings. Excellent !
