Commercial Description:
Brutal combines Oregon hops with English Malts. The Oregon grown Crystal hop is a triploid variety developed from the German Hallertau aroma hop variety with contributions from Cascade, Brewers Gold, and Early Green. Crystal is the only hop used in brewing Brutal and it provides a massive amount of aroma without dry-hopping. The English malts used are floor malted Pipkin (a mellow cross of Maris Otter and Warboys, from an English company called Beeston), Cara Vienna and Cara Wheat.

Bottle at Mondial de la Bière 2009 in Montréal. The hoppiest Bitter I had, perhaps, and one of the finests. Great body, very tasty, sweetened malts and great depth of hop taste. Excellent beer. Is there anything you Americans do better then crafted beers? I don’t think so...

On tap at McGloughlin’s in Kyoto. Aromatic and balanced aroma of hops and caramel malt. the flavor follows it right up. Pine, citrus, fruit. No surprises, just a perfectly done premium bitter. Great on tap.

agreed, this is more a pale ale than a premium bitter. beautiful hazy orange with medium-sized, long lasting off-white head. lots of lacing on my pint glass. really good, but not what I’d give someone who was looking for a good bitter, specifically.

Aroma hits you right away. Great bitter taste (heaven). The only downside is a little lingering chalkiness afterwards, but still a great beer.

Bottle. This is a golden orange colour with a thick, spongy, two inch off white head. There’s plenty of lacing left on the glass. The aroma is great with a ton of citrus up front, tropical fruits, especially pineapple, fresh mango, orange, some lemon, also some fresh avocado. The mouthfeel is medium in body, fairly oily; it clings a bit to the tongue. I taste plenty of fresh fruity hops, subtly bitter with lots of mango, some more of that avocado, lemon then some pineapple. The malt background is mostly bready with some mild toffee. The overall hop impression is dominated by fresh fruit; very nice.

Great looking beer with fantastic lacing. Floral and caramel aroma with some citrus. Plenty of bitterness in the taste, but by no means brutally so. The malt and floral notes, along with some white grape flavor, balance this quite well. This is a refreshing beer.

Poured hazy orange with a white head, aroma of citrus and lemon, with faint orange peel. Tasted very balanced with a refreshing bitter aftertaste, a perfect example of how an ESB should taste.

Bottle. Pours hazy orange with a fluffy white head which leaves lots of lace. Aroma is very hoppy and has hints of caramel, musk and citrus. Flavour is also hoppy with citrus and caramel as well as touches of spice and earthiness. Very smooth, almost creamy, mouthfeel. This is a great beer from Rogue, excellently balanced, shows off the hops in their best possible light.
