Commercial Description:
Brutal combines Oregon hops with English Malts. The Oregon grown Crystal hop is a triploid variety developed from the German Hallertau aroma hop variety with contributions from Cascade, Brewers Gold, and Early Green. Crystal is the only hop used in brewing Brutal and it provides a massive amount of aroma without dry-hopping. The English malts used are floor malted Pipkin (a mellow cross of Maris Otter and Warboys, from an English company called Beeston), Cara Vienna and Cara Wheat.

Nice golden color. This beer is extra hoppy. As the name applies it has a nice bitter finish. The beer is anything but brutal on my taste buds.

Good brew. Again, Rogue does it right. Can they do no wrong? Cloudy orange color. HOPPY aroma. HOPPY flavor. Reminds me of a pale ale quite a bit. Nice beer

Nicely balanced malt, hop aroma, bitterness of the hops is dominant in the taste, although the taste is not forceful , a wonderful bitter aftertaste.

Bottle: Poured a rust color with a minimal cream head and good lacing. Very piney aroma, with a bit of a medicinal whang. Flavor os hoppy up front, with a dry bitter finish. Excellent with the ribs I had.

Very strong perfume-like hop nose has notes of orange, apple blossom and grapefruit and a fairly strong supporting caramel malty sweetness. Hazy, murky, copper-amber body is topped with a dense, fine-bubbled, lasting, off-white head that leaves some nice lacing. Intense grapefruit and strong bitterness as well as a full, rich, earthy and caramel malt body suggest more of a strong pale ale than an ESB but regardless of style, it’s well-brewed and enjoyable. Blossom-like hop flavours last on the tongue with some lingering sweetness and the lasting bitterness. Grapefruit character becomes more dominant in the aroma flavour and after taste as it warms. Medium body that has a somewhat sticky texture tempered by a moderate, crisp carbonation that engages the tongue and cheeks. Tulip glass, allowed to warm from fridge temp. Bottle (trade, Apr. 2005). Thanks, Olivier_MTL!

Big time hoppiness, lots of grapefruit. Not overly brutal either, just a really good all-around beer.

Sampled from bottle at Stockholm Beer & Whisky Festival 2004 (#44).
Cloudy orange colored with a fine off-white head. Fresh and full bittersweet hoppy and fruity aroma with notes of apricot and orange. Plenty of bitter hops in the flavor with a fruity middle. Very dry specially in the finish. Fresh and very tasty!

Cloudy orange pour with an appealing off-white head. Aroma of piney hops with some floral notes when warmed. It is brutal as advertised. The hops litterally attack you from every angle. Personally, I love it. Nice malt backbone. Not quite a ’brutal bitter’ finish, but nice nonetheless. This beer is classified as an ESB which just isn’t right, but whatever, if you like hops like me you will absolutely love this beer. It really IS that good. I can't believe I passed this one by for so long.
