Commercial Description:
Brutal combines Oregon hops with English Malts. The Oregon grown Crystal hop is a triploid variety developed from the German Hallertau aroma hop variety with contributions from Cascade, Brewers Gold, and Early Green. Crystal is the only hop used in brewing Brutal and it provides a massive amount of aroma without dry-hopping. The English malts used are floor malted Pipkin (a mellow cross of Maris Otter and Warboys, from an English company called Beeston), Cara Vienna and Cara Wheat.

Pours lovely deep golden with an almost orange/pink hue, big, dense, white fluffy head. Aroma is fantastic, really zesty with subtle amount of spice, lots of citrus, classic pink grapefruit, cut grass, some tropical fruits, passion fruit? Lychee? Sweet florals. Flavour is delightful, more citrus, orange zest, lemon, light ginger notes and more ripe pink grapefruit, very clean and crisp with a hint of spice, no sign of the almost 7% abv. Refreshing with the right amount of dryness. Palate is soft and creamy. All finishes very refreshing, pretty dry and spicy. The beer is deceptively complex, it comes across a straight forward refreshing glugger, but spend time with it and the depth keeps increasing, easy going but a great beer.

Bottle. Pours an unclear golden with a massive creamy off-white head. Beautiful aroma of grapefruit, honeyish malt and pine hop notes. The flavour is grapefruit, citrus, honey, biscuit and pine. Great hoppy bitterness that lingers along with a fruity finish. I could easily sit and enjoy a few of these. Bloody delicious.

Light orange colored with cloudy appearance. Little yellow head. Toffee dominates this sweet and bitter aroma with honey, plums and floral hops, rich aroma indeed. Medium bodied. Flavor is more bitter in start, still sweet honey, flowers and plummy-raisins dominate. Aftertaste dries with honey still. Good beer.

Bottle into a pint glass. Orange hazy with slight head. Very citrus aroma. Taste is definite citrus with very malty finish. Palate is good clean feel with no aftertaste that some bitters have given me in the past.

Cloudy amber body, with a rich frothy head. Very fruity on the nose, with citrus, apple, and plum notes, as well as some honey and caramel. The taste is quite fruity from the beginning to end. A decent hop bite. The maltiness is quite complex, but not as complex as in original English ESB’s. The bitterness was quite mild at first, but as I was drinking it, it became more apparent. The finish is bready, with some bitterness, and a hint of citrus. Overall, it’s a good tasty beer, but it’s not entirely up to the scale of true English ESB’s.

Many bottles at many locations and also on tap at the brewpub. Hazy golden-orange pour with a thick and sticky white cap. Aroma is big grapefruit hops mixed with some light pine and a very small biscuit backing. Flavor is the citrus hop upfront with some light pine hopping and a decent biscuit malt background. Slightly unbalanced, but in a way I like. This is one of the best ESBs I’ve ever had.

Pours deep hazy orange/amber. Aroma is immediate of Crystal hops, which leads to its sweet taste. Not over hopped, but plenty of hop bite. Head lingers and is off white. Good English style Pale Ale bitter.
