Commercial Description:
Originally brewed and bottled for the 2001 National Craft Brewers Conference-a private bottling & release with no distribution. A second batch, Charlie Redux was brewed with very limited distribution. 2005 is the hat-trick batch, Charlie 1981 returns for a third time as part of John's Locker Stock!

Charlie 1981 is an unfiltered strong ale, it exhibits massive bitterness and a firm malt backbone. Hedonistic! Brewed using Pale Malt, Munich and Crystal 40 malts, Horizon, Sterling and Amarillo Hops. Estimated measurements are: 18.2 degrees Plato (OG), 3.5 Degrees Plato (TG), 75 IBU's, 8.5% ABV. Prost!

Charlie 1981 is named in honor of Charlie Papazian, president of the Association of Brewers, founder of the American Homebrewers Association and homebrewing guru. John Maier, Brewmaster for Rogue Ales, made his first batch of beer in 1981 using Papazian's influential book "The New Complete Joy of Homebrewing."

Amber pour, almost no head. What the hell was this I seriously thought they messed my order up. More of a pale ale nothing but a blast of hops mostly grapefruit, what a dissapointment. Maybe a slight and I mean slight sweetness from the malts, then a kick in the ass from more bitter ass hops.

On tap at Front Door Boise, Pours out a hazy amber topped with a very small head. A very nice hop aroma and tast. I also picked up on some of the Malt on this one.

Cloudy deep orange amber in color with thin dissapating head. Aroma is strongly hoppy, floral and citrus dominate with some malt underneath. Flavor mirrors the aroma in the dominance of hops. Tons of hop flavor, but not overwhelmingly bitter, malt and alcohol balance. Nice

Draft - Frisco Grille - Hazed deep copper, thin white fizzy head. Nose held notes of lightly sweet pine, grapefruit rind, with a soft underlying doughy maltiness. Flavor is deeply hopped, orangey citirc notes, with touches of pine and florals playing throughout. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, sahara dry, bitter finish. Tasty hops from start to finish....

Amber color with a medium white head. Strong piney-sweet hop aroma with plenty of sweet caramel in the nose. Taste is nice and smooth, with sweet, bready malts and some powerful, yet smooth hops that balance things out. Very nice ASA - not quite an Arrogant/Double Bastard-like assault, but a smooth and overall well-rounded Strong Ale. They should really put this one back in bottles!

Charlie ’07; John’s Locker Stock . Picked up a growler at Capone’s (Norristown, PA) for Super Bowl Festivities. Poured hazy brownish, with a moderate sized tan head. Aroma was primarilt citrus and hops. Flavor was all hops as well. finishes dry. This has been on my want list since I heard of its release in 2001, i’m glad I finally got to sample it.

I’ve tasted the original 1981. (AKA the New Hope, the Star Wars of Beers!!!) Amazing complexity. It is ruby red in color. Hop Aroma you could not believe. Redux was ok, just not quite the same. One Big Chuck, Please!

Sampled at RBSG 2006- Grand Tasting. This bottle had been opened the previous night, so it does not deserve this rating most likely. A cloudy murky amber concoction with what appears to be coffee grounds remaining in the bottom of the glass. Has an astringent peppery aroma (perhaps a bit oxidized). Earthy and dirty. Caramel flavors and an alcohol burn. I’d like to encounter this again. I once met Charlie papazian at GABF in 1990. His nose is not un-big.
