Commercial Description:
Originally brewed and bottled for the 2001 National Craft Brewers Conference-a private bottling & release with no distribution. A second batch, Charlie Redux was brewed with very limited distribution. 2005 is the hat-trick batch, Charlie 1981 returns for a third time as part of John's Locker Stock!

Charlie 1981 is an unfiltered strong ale, it exhibits massive bitterness and a firm malt backbone. Hedonistic! Brewed using Pale Malt, Munich and Crystal 40 malts, Horizon, Sterling and Amarillo Hops. Estimated measurements are: 18.2 degrees Plato (OG), 3.5 Degrees Plato (TG), 75 IBU's, 8.5% ABV. Prost!

Charlie 1981 is named in honor of Charlie Papazian, president of the Association of Brewers, founder of the American Homebrewers Association and homebrewing guru. John Maier, Brewmaster for Rogue Ales, made his first batch of beer in 1981 using Papazian's influential book "The New Complete Joy of Homebrewing."

Courtesy of springslicker (?), RBSG 06. Pleasant maple syrup and caramel aromas, with a big nose (the beer, not Charles Papazian, who probably has a very reasonably-sized nose). Slightly minty, malty. Quite similar profile to Bell’s Batch 4,000, w/o the prominent oranges. Very enjoyable brew. 9.4.9.5.17=4.4 Rerate, tap, Frisco’s Grille. 7.4.9.4.16=4.0

Bottle... RBSG2006... Hazy, copper ale with a small, creamy, khaki head. Malty, caramel and toffee aroma with esters of tropical and fuzzy fruits. Perfectly-bittered for perfect balance. No sweetness at all, even at room temperature. The nose definitely makes promises the flavor can’t keep, but that’s good in this case. The flavor is easy going and not in the least bit hot. Age has served this beer well. The differences in the flavor and the nose add complexity and variety to the brew. Medium-bodied with lively carbonation. Short, bitter finish. The relatively high ABV is completely concealed. Right on! Kudos to springslicker for sharing the bottle!

Tap @ Summits Cumming: Slightly hazed dark amber with a small off-white head. Aroma of pine and citrus hops. Sweet and fruity malt underneath. The aroma is nice and thick. Sweet caramel malty flavor with piney hop running through it from the middle to the long semi-dry bitter finish. The hop flavor trys to keep on going. Stays long after the malt. Light carbonation. Medium to full bodied.

I was given a six pack of Charlie 1981 by John M. while visting the Rouge brewery @ newport in 2001r. I do remember it was a wonderful brew with a fantastic hop content and rich robust flavor.

Under the name John’s Locker Stock on tap at Rogue Ales Public House, SF, August 2005. Reddish amber ale with a thin white head. Sweet caramel malt and floral hops aroma. In mouth, like maple cream with pinhey hops, and herbal grassy notes. Medium bodied. Very smooth.

Draft at Summit’s in Atlanta. WOW! I had this beer when it was originally released years ago and remembered it being one of my favorites. Well, it still is. This is a really good beer. Similar to Big Foot but dare I say better.

On tap, labeled as John’s Locker Stock. Clear amber body, thin white head. Bitter citrus (grapefruit rind) flavor with a cereal-y caramel background. Renious finish. I’m suprised to see this styled as an ASA it struck me as an ordinary IPA.

This dark amber ale poured with a modest off-white head. The flavor is quite hoppy and bitter, but massive malting results in a very pleasant balance. Thanks to Charlie P. for inspiring this great brew.
